Legal Sports Betting in Mississippi - Is Mobile Betting Coming?

In June of 2021, Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards signed a sports gaming legalization bill. In addition to retail sportsbooks, it allows mobile sports betting in 56 of the state’s 64 parishes.

Mississippi is a close neighbor, and legal online sports betting next door will definitely cut into its casino revenue. This was not lost on Mississippi legislators, and you have to assume that the gaming industry executives weighed in on the subject quite heavily.

In the beginning of November of 2021, WLOX in Biloxi reported on a statement that was made by Casey Eure. He is the chair of the Mississippi House Gaming Committee, and he is crafting a mobile wagering legalization bill. It should be completed by the end of the year.

He is working in conjunction with the Mississippi Gaming and Hospitality Association (MGHA). It has expressed concern about Mississippi sportsbooks losing revenue as people cross the Louisiana border to make mobile sports bets.

This will not be the first effort to legalize mobile betting. The most recent failed attempts were SB 2396, SB 2732 and its companion bill, HB 1042. These measures were introduced early in 2021.

However, they were squashed before the rollout of legal sports betting in Louisiana. The MGHA and industry-friendly lawmakers are hoping that this threat will change enough minds.

How Mississippi Legalized Sports Betting

Legalized sports betting in The Magnolia State came about in an interesting way. The existing casino legalization law restricted the activity to in-casino activities. Betting on events that took place outside of casino grounds was prohibited.

House Bill 967 was signed into law on March 13, 2017. It legalized daily fantasy sports contests. Lawmakers that were quoted by Mississippi Today stated that the term “sports betting” was not used in the verbiage.

They had no idea that its passage allowed riverboat casinos to open sportsbooks, but that was the outcome when the federal prohibition was removed. Since the full legislative body never knowingly approved sports betting in the first place, the failure of Senate Bill 2396 is not surprising.

More: Mississippi unlikely to approve more retail betting soon

Launch Date for MS Online and Mobile Sportsbooks

We cannot say with full certainty that the sports betting bill that is being crafted by Representative Eure will pass. The process is in its infancy, and he has stated that he expects to introduce the measure to his own House Gaming Committee by January 1, 2022.

The voters in most of the parishes in Louisiana voted to legalize sports betting in November of 2020, and this gives us a clue. As we have stated, three mobile sports betting bills were shot down in 2021, after lawmakers knew that sports gaming was coming to Louisiana.

Will they have a change of heart because an already determined outcome has been actualized?

It would be premature to project a launch date since the legalization of online sports betting is very much in doubt. There is cause for optimism because Eure is in a position to gauge the temperature of his colleagues, so it is unlikely that he would waste his time.

Mississippi Sports Betting Apps - When Will They Become Available?

Mobile sports betting apps in Mississippi will become available when and if legal online wagering is rolled out. However, if you are in a casino with a sportsbook, you can make bets online at that sportsbook if it has a mobile betting app.

BetMGM, Golden Moon Hotel & Casino, Bok Homa Casino and Silver Star Casino Hotel have sports betting apps that you can use when you are on site.

Potential Mississippi Sportsbooks

Since Mississippi sports betting is legal at casinos in Mississippi, some partnerships have already been established. In all likelihood, these companies will also be able to operate online sportsbooks when mobile sports betting is legalized.

Of course, some of the existing retail sportsbooks are being operated in-house. These licensed casinos will probably negotiate partnerships with established online sportsbooks.

Fanduel Sportsbook

Since FanDuel has an existing partnership with Sam’s Town Casino & Gambling Hall, we expect it to be a participant when they launch sports betting online. The name is very familiar because of the daily fantasy sports connection, so it has somewhat of a built-in advantage.

The FanDuel mobile betting app is well-developed, and it has always been an Internet-based entity, so it was well prepared to enter the sports betting fray. Its $1,000 risk-free bet bonus is better than many, and established players can take advantage of ongoing promotions.

MGM Resorts International has devoted considerable resources to establishing the BetMGM online sports betting division. The company has joined forces with Entain Holdings, a longstanding European firm that was originally established back in 2004.

If online betting is eventually approved in Mississippi, BetMGM will be positioned to enter the market through its partnerships with Beau Rivage and Gold Strike Casino Resort.

Caesars Sportsbook

Caesars Entertainment is one of the most notable gaming companies in the world. The iconic flagship location on the Las Vegas Strip launch Caesars sportsbook.

The company seized a large presence in this space when it acquired British bookmaker William Hill for $4 billion in April of 2021. It hit the ground running, and Caesars online betting will be ready to pounce in Mississippi when the time comes.

DraftKings Sportsbook

DraftKings is dominant in daily fantasy sports, and has a Mississippi casino partnership with Scarlet Pearl Casino in D’Iberville. The online betting site is solid all things considered, but the welcome offer leaves something to be desired.

You get a 20% first deposit match in bonus cash, but it isn't released right away. For every $25 that is bet, one dollar is released. So the immediate impact is minimal unless you're a large bettor.

Wynn Resorts is the brainchild of Las Vegas gambling industry pioneer Steve Wynn and has been going strong since the early 200s. In 2020, the WynnBET online betting arm finally launched. The company has a chance to get its fair share of the online sports betting revenue in Mississippi.

Currently, there is no Wynn presence in the state, but some of the land-based sportsbooks are not currently aligned with companies that operate sports betting sites. WynnBET may make an effort to connect with an unaffiliated licensed casino.

Barstool Sportsbook

Barstool Sports was founded in 2004 by Dave Portnoy, and it was a gambling-related print publication that was circulated around Boston. An online version was established three years later, and in 2016, The Chemin Group bought a majority share.

This infusion of capital took the company to another level, and Penn National Gaming purchased a significant stake in 2020. It has fueled Barstool’s entry into the mobile sports betting market.

Penn National Gaming owns a number of casinos in Mississippi, so the Barstool Sportsbook MS will definitely have a home when people can bet on sports online.

Bally Bet

Bally’s Corporation reemerged in 2020 when Twin River Worldwide Holdings bought the rights to the name from Caesars Entertainment. Bally Bet is its online platform for taking sports wagers, and there is a land-based Bally’s casino in Vicksburg, Mississippi.

The pathway is there for the taking, but they need the legislature to recognize the potential impact of online sports betting revenue.

TwinSpires Sports

Anyone that has ever watched the Kentucky Derby is familiar with the iconic twin spires that tower over Churchill Downs in Louisville. TwinSpires betting on horse races was happening before legal sports betting was possible. Now, it is a major player in this space.

There are TwinSpires Sportsbooks in Arizona, Colorado, Indiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Tennessee. Mississippi may be added to this list because there are land-based TwinSpires sportsbooks and sports betting kiosks in the state.

Bonuses and Promotions for MS Sports Bettors

Mississippi bettors will have options, so there will be fierce competition among the operators that will offer sports betting online. Players will benefit from the crowd playing field because the sites try to outdo one another with their bonus offers.

Will MS Sportsbooks be Offering Pre-Registration and Pre-Live Promos?

After a state officially legalizes online sports betting, it takes them some time to finalize the guidelines. During that interim, sports betting operators sometimes offer pre-registration bonuses to generate interest in advance.

We will probably see some pre-registration promotions if Mississippi lawmakers legalize sports betting. For example, BetMGM in Arizona offered $200 in free bets before the betting sites went live.

Pre-launch bonuses are sometimes offered by online gambling sites shortly after the legalization in a given state. They want to get ahead of the competition and capture the attention of future customers. We will share these Mississippi sportsbook promo codes when they become available.

Sign-Up Bonuses

The risk-free bet up to a certain limit is very commonly offered. A $1,000 limit is a good offer, and Caesars was offering this promotion with a $5,000 limit, but it has been discontinued. You will also see deposit match bonuses with significant playthrough requirements.

Another type of bonus is a free bet, and you do not have to put out any of your own money if you take advantage of this promotion. If your free bet is a winner, you keep the profit. There may or may not be a playthrough requirement depending on the terms of the promotion that you are using.

Events Promotions

Mobile betting sites run special promotions in conjunction with big-time events that capture the public’s interest. There will be bonus offers related to the Super Bowl, World Series, March Madness, the Indianapolis 500 and other highly anticipated sporting events.

They also have one-off promotions tied to a certain game, or an odds boost bonus on a designated sport on a particular day of the week.

Loyalty Programs

When you can bet on sports online, you will discover operator loyalty programs. You earn points when you place wagers, and they accumulate over time. There are gradient tiers that you reach as your credits increase, and rewards are commensurate with your tier level.

This is a nice perk, but there is another element to take into consideration. You can establish accounts at multiple different online gambling sites. Every time you open a new account, you get a welcome bonus, and this will be more valuable than slowly accumulating loyalty points.

There is another reason why it is wise to have several accounts. Before you place wagers, you should check out the betting lines at the competing sites. If you make this a practice, you will always get the best odds for the bets that you are making.

Which Sports will be allowed to bet on?

If online sportsbooks in Mississippi are legalized, they will operate under the same laws that apply to retail sportsbooks. You can bet on all professional sports, and you can place bets on collegiate sports with no prohibition on games that involve in-state teams.

Mississippi bettors will not be limited to major sports like football, basketball, baseball and hockey. You will be able to bet on soccer, tennis, golf, motorsports, UFC, boxing, cricket, Australian rules football, cycling, darts, table tennis, volleyball and snooker.

With the exception of college sporting events and the Olympics, Mississippi sports bettors cannot wager on amateur sports.

Will DFS and Horse Betting be allowed in Mississippi?

Daily fantasy sports contests are legal in Mississippi. Horse racing is another legal activity, and the Palace Casino Resort opened the first race book in the state on April 17, 2019.

Do Bettors Need to Be Mississippi Residents to bet online?

If you are 21 or older, you can make a bet at a legal online sportsbook in a state that has legalized sports gambling. You do have to be physically present in the state when you are making the bet.

They accept deposits through trusted intermediaries like banks, credit cards and PayPal. Yes, it can be a little bit disconcerting to disclose your personal information, but it simply comes with the territory.

  • Boxing
  • MMA
  • Golf
  • Tennis
  • Motorsports
  • Soccer
  • Rugby
  • Handball
  • Cycling
  • Darts
  • Cricket
  • Table Tennis
  • Australian Rules Football

Our recommended sportsbooks would likely offer parlay betting, moneyline betting, pointspread betting, totals betting, teasers, futures, live betting and proposition wagering.

Competitive Odds

As we have stated, the odds are going to vary on a site-by-site basis. Since most of these operators operate brick-and-mortar sportsbooks, there is an industry-standard with regard to the lines. They are all competitive, and you have to do your homework to find the most favorable odds for a given bet.

User Experience

These are multimillion-dollar companies that will be making long-term investments in online Mississippi sports betting. They all have presence in other states, so they have refined their respective internet sportsbook products.

Their interfaces are intuitive and user-friendly, so you will feel comfortable placing bets without much of a learning curve. The aesthetic designs are unique to each individual operator, and they all have some type of appeal.

How the Mississippi Gaming Commission Decides which Operators Get Licenses

The decision-making process that will be used by the Mississippi Gaming Commission will depend on the details of the law that is enacted. Representative Eure says that he will create a bill that gives existing license holders the right to partner with internet sportsbooks.

A measure that is passed could limit the number of online gaming licenses that can be issued. We will closely monitor the progress of the bill and share further information as it becomes available.

Projected Gaming Revenue from Mobile Sports Betting in Mississippi

In the states that have legalized sports gaming, mobile wagering revenue dwarfs the traditional sportsbook handle. The population of Mississippi is similar to Iowa, and in September of 2021, the total handle in Iowa was over $210 million.

Mobile betting accounted for $186 million of that revenue, so legal online Mississippi sports betting will supercharge gaming revenue in the state.

Taxable winnings

Gambling winnings are taxable, so you are required to report them when you file your returns. However, your losses are deductible, so you can take this into account. You cannot deduct losses unless they are being used to offset the impact of taxable winnings.
