PGA Tour predictions: 2023 Fortinet Championship odds, picks

The first tournament of the inaugural FedExCup Fall begins this week with the 2023 Fortinet Championship at Silverado Resort in California.

It’s the 1st of 7 events this fall as Max Homa goes for the threepeat at this event in his home state. Homa secured the Fortinet Championship title in 2021 and successfully defended it last year during the best season of his career to date.

He's the front-runner to achieve a third consecutive win, especially as he prepares for his inaugural Ryder Cup appearance later this month but will face stiff competition, not least from team USA partner Justin Thomas.

Naturally, the best online betting sites, including BetMGM, FanDuel, and Caesars hold some intriguing 2023 Fortinet Championship odds

2023 Fortinet Championship: Course Preview

Rory McIlroy

Nestled amidst the golden hills of Napa Valley, the Fortinet Championship kicks off the fall segment of the PGA Tour season in California.

Max Homa, a California native, returns with the aim of defending his consecutive titles from the previous two years.

Hosted for the tenth straight year at Silverado Resort and Spa's North course, the venue is known for its short layout, narrow tree-lined fairways, minimal hazards, forgiving rough, and challenging sloping greens. The course has consistently yielded a winning score averaging 17 under par since 2014.

Breaking from tradition, the PGA Tour is not launching a new season this September. Now rebranded as the "FedEx Cup Fall," the Fortinet Championship is the first of seven events that extend the recently concluded 2022-2023 season.

Players ranked in the top 50 of the FedEx Cup standings are eligible for all eight "Signature" events in 2024 as well as other regular events.

For those who missed the top 50, the fall tournaments offer a chance to improve their standings ahead of the new season. This can enable them to qualify for the first two Signature events— the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the Genesis Invitational.

By the end of this fall series, players who end the year in positions 51-60 will secure exemptions for these two high-profile tournaments.

2023 Fortinet Championship: The Field

Max Homa

The field strength for most of these autumn tournaments is notably weak, and this event is no exception. Only four players from the top 50 and 23 from the top 100 global rankings will participate.

Max Homa, ranked 7th worldwide, is the star attraction as he aims to become the first golfer since Steve Stricker (2009-2011 at the John Deere Classic) to clinch the same event three times consecutively.

Ranked 25th, Justin Thomas aims to fine-tune his skills ahead of the Ryder Cup in three weeks. Sahith Theegala and Cameron Davis, ranked 36th and 49th respectively, are the only other top 50 players competing.

Homa is leading the odds at +750 to secure his third consecutive Fortinet Championship title this week.

He faces stiff competition from notable players including Justin Thomas, who has odds of +1400, and Sahith Theegala at +1800, as well as Cam Davis, who's set at +2500.

2023 Fortinet Championship: Betting Preview, Best Bets & Odds

2023 Fortinet Championship Bet #1: Justin Thomas (+1800) at FanDuel

Golf

Justin Thomas has a strong track record at Silverado, finishing T4 in 2019, T8 in 2016, and T3 in 2015.

Although he skipped the Fortinet for four seasons, viewing it as beneath him, he now needs to accumulate FedExCup points.

One of Thomas's struggles last season was his putting, yet historically he has gained strokes on Silverado's greens in four of his five Fortinet starts. Silverado's course design, featuring runoffs around the green, suits JT's elite around-the-green play.

Over the last 50 rounds, he leads the field in scoring chances, and considering Poa is his best putting surface, Thomas is well-positioned to capitalize on these opportunities this week.

2023 Fortinet Championship Bet #2: Brendon Todd (+3500) at BetMGM

Golf

Fleetwood's golf season ignited with a 3rd-place finish at the Valspar Championship in March, setting the tone for an impressive run.

Ahead of the 2023 Fortinet Championship, Brendon Todd is a player to watch, despite his lack of distance off the tee.

Silverado Resort, the tournament's venue, doesn't put a premium on length, making it a good fit for Todd's skill set.

His compatibility with the course is reflected in his strong past performances here. He finished 9th and 22nd in his two most recent starts at this event and also secured a 26th place finish back in 2016, when the tournament was known as the Frys.com Open.

These stats indicate that Todd could be a strong contender in the upcoming championship.

2023 Fortinet Championship Bet #3: Andrew Putnam (+4000) at Caesars

Golf

In the last 50 rounds, Putnam stands out, ranking 3rd in this field for Strokes Gained: Approach and 4th in both Par 5 scoring and Good Drives Gained. He also places 8th in Par 4 Efficiency for holes between 400-450 yards—a relevant stat, as Silverado's North Course features six Par 4s in this distance range.

Approach play is often considered the most critical metric for golf handicapping, and Good Drives Gained blends both distance and tee-shot accuracy. Putnam excels in putting; he ranked 6th in total Strokes Gained: Putting last season and averaged a gain of +3.0 strokes per event in his last five starts.

Rounding out his strong profile, Putnam ended last season on a high note. He made nine consecutive cuts from the Charles Schwab Challenge in May through to the second round of the FedExCup playoffs at the BMW Championship in August, finishing T10 at the BMW and T5 at the Memorial Tournament, a Tour "Signature Event."
