2023 John Deere Classic Picks: 

A place at The Open Championship at Royal Liverpool is up for grabs for the winner of this week’s John Deere Classic in Illinois.

After Ricky Fowler took the spoils last week at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, the PGA Tour makes one final stateside stop at TPC Deere Run for the John Deere Classic before the Scottish Open and The Open Championship. 

JT Poston completed a wire-to-wire victory 12 months ago to secure his second PGA Tour title. Three strokes ahead entering the day at TPC Deere Run, Poston closed with a 2-under 69 for a three-stroke margin over fellow Open Championship qualifiers Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Emiliano Grillo.

Russell Henley and Denny McCarthy, who are No. 29 and 34, respectively, in the world, are the +1400 co-favorites in the latest 2023 John Deere Classic golf odds. 

Cameron Young, the highest-ranked player in the field at No. 19, is the third choice in the odds, at +1600. 

LUCAS GLOVER (+800)

Lucas Glover, the previous winner of the John Deere Classic two years ago, appears to be a formidable contender again in 2023. Notably, the veteran golfer has adjusted his putting grip, which immediately paid off at the Rocket Mortgage Classic last week, where he gained an impressive 5.4 strokes on the greens.

While Glover's new putting grip alone may not be sufficient to secure victory at the John Deere Classic this week, his overall game also shows positive signs. His ball-striking has been improving, as evidenced by gaining 6.1 strokes on approach shots in his recent tournament. Over his past five starts, Glover's performance has been on an upward trajectory, averaging a gain of 3.1 strokes over the field from tee to green.

Considering his recent success and strong history at TPC Deere Run, Glover should enter this week's competition with confidence.

STEPHEN JAEGER (+4100)

Stephan Jaegar showcased impressive iron play at the Rocket Mortgage Classic last week, which historically bodes well for success at the John Deere Classic. The German golfer gained an impressive 4.0 strokes on approach shots and 6.6 strokes from tee to green. His ninth-place finish marked his best performance in 2023, and I believe he can build upon that momentum in the upcoming tournament.

Although Jaeger has only participated in the John Deere Classic once, finishing 30th, he appears to be a great fit for the course. Over his past 24 rounds, he ranks eighth in the field in terms of Birdie or Better Gained and fifth on par-4s ranging from 400 to 450 yards. Additionally, he gained a remarkable 10.8 strokes from tee to green at TPC Deere Run last year, indicating that the course aligns well with his game.

While Jaeger has yet to secure a victory on the PGA Tour, he has claimed six wins on the Korn Ferry Tour. His triumphs have come against formidable opponents, instilling confidence in his ability to succeed if he finds himself in contention on Sunday.

CHEZ REAVIE (+6500)

Chez Reavie arrives at the John Deere Classic with his golf game at one of its highest levels in recent years. The seasoned veteran's impressive fourth-place finish at the Travelers Championship put him in contention for a potential victory heading into the final round.

Despite not securing a win in Connecticut, Reavie didn't let the disappointment hinder his performance at Detroit Golf Club last week. Although he ultimately finished tied for 29th, his ball striking in Detroit provided ample reason for optimism. Reavie led the field by over a stroke, gaining an impressive 8.7 strokes on approach shots.

While Reavie encountered some struggles on the greens in Detroit, it appears to be an anomaly in his recent performance. Despite not being historically known as a strong putter, he had gained strokes, putting in ten consecutive events leading up to the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

When Chez Reavie finds his rhythm, few players in the field can match his prowess with irons. His exceptional ball-striking form over his last three starts indicates that he is in excellent shape and is a compelling contender for an outright bet at TPC Deere Run.
