2023 ZOZO Championship Prediction & Picks

The 2023 Zozo Championship takes the PGA Tour to Japan this week, specifically at the Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club, just outside Tokyo.

Historically, this tournament has unfolded at the Narashino Country Club's 7,079-yard course in Chiba, Japan, with previous champions including Tiger Woods, Hideki Matsuyama, and Keegan Bradley.

A common thread among these champions is their exceptional performance from tee to green, consistently making enough birdies to secure victory with scores in the 15-to-19-under range.

This pattern bodes well for contenders aiming to conquer this challenging golf course.

So ahead of the first ball being struck, we've taken a look at the best online betting sites, including BetMGM, FanDuel, and Caesars, hold some interesting 2023 ZOZO Championship odds.

Tournament History

The ZOZO Championship, now in its fifth installment, is a unique tournament co-sanctioned by the PGA Tour and the Japan Tour, although it doesn't hold official status on the latter.

In its inaugural year, Tiger Woods claimed victory, marking his 82nd and final win. However, in 2020, due to the pandemic, the event was relocated to the Sherwood Country Club in California. We returned to Japan two years ago, witnessing a dominant win by hometown favorite Hideki Matsuyama, and Keegan Bradley secured the title with flair in the previous year.

The ZOZO Championship features a limited field, with only 15 out of the 78 entrants being members of the Japan Golf Tour.

Narashino Country Club boasts a 36-hole layout, comprised of the King and Queen courses. The ZOZO Championship combines elements from both, featuring five par threes and five par fives.

Historically, Japanese golf courses featured two greens per hole, allowing play year-round with different grass strains for each season. Narashino, established in 1965, initially adhered to this practice, but now exclusively features bentgrass greens.

The greens were exceptionally fast, with a Stimpmeter rating of 12.5 last year, slightly quicker than the 12 in 2021 and 11.5 four years ago. Initially, the tradition of two greens extended to the fourth hole but shifted to the fifth in 2021 and continued last year.

To accommodate this tradition, a "wrong green" local rule is in effect, permitting golfers to take relief without penalty if they land on the incorrect green, ensuring fair play. The course is tree-lined, fairly narrow, and the greens appear smaller than average.

Sungjae Im (+1400) at FanDuel

⭐ Sungjae Im (+1400) at FanDuel

Sungjae Im has been performing exceptionally well lately, positioning himself near the top of the leaderboard.

Notably, he secured a Gold medal for South Korea at the Asian Games alongside Si Woo Kim, effectively exempting himself from mandatory military service. This relief has allowed Im to fully concentrate on his golf career.

In his recent form, Im continued to shine, securing a remarkable 2nd place finish in Korea just last week. As he returns to the upcoming tournament, he revisits a course that holds positive memories for him. In 2019,

Im showcased his skills and finished in the 3rd position, a remarkable achievement considering he was only bested by golf legend Tiger Woods.

With the pressure of military service behind him, Im enters this event with renewed focus and determination, eager to make his mark in the world of professional golf.

However, it's intriguing to note that his outright odds don't fully reflect his past successes. Surprisingly, there are eight other players with the same or better odds to win than Bradley, which may not accurately represent his potential given his history of strong performances at this venue. It suggests that there might be an opportunity for astute bettors to consider Bradley as a compelling contender despite the odds seemingly underestimating his capabilities on this particular course.

⭐ Best PGA Pick: Sungjae Im (+1400) at FanDuel

Keegan Bradley (+2200) at Caesars

⭐  Keegan Bradley (+2200) at Caesars

Keegan Bradley's track record at this tournament is nothing short of impressive.

Not only did he secure a victory here last year, but his consistent performance is evident with a T-7 finish in 2021 and a T-13 finish in 2019.

Clearly, Bradley has a strong affinity for this course, consistently demonstrating his ability to navigate it effectively. However, it's intriguing to note that his outright odds don't fully reflect his past successes.

Emiliano Grillo (+5000) at BetMGM

⭐ Emiliano Grillo (+5000) at BetMGM

Emiliano Grillo's history at this event reveals an intriguing trajectory. While he landed in 30th place in 2019 and 73rd in 2021, his performance took a notable upswing last year.

Grillo came tantalizingly close to clinching victory, ultimately securing a solo 4th place finish, just two strokes behind Keegan Bradley, the event's winner.

Although Grillo encountered missed cuts in his most recent two starts this season, it's essential to consider his form before this downturn. He boasted strong showings with finishes of T-6, T-10, T-20, T-31, and T-29 in his preceding five starts, demonstrating his potential to contend at the highest level.

In light of his recent resurgence and past near-miss at this tournament, Grillo represents an appealing option with favorable odds at +5000.

This week could potentially serve as his opportunity to return to form and make a significant impact on the leaderboard.
