New Las Vegas Raiders QB Jimmy Garoppolo was medically cleared to take snaps and practice during training camp as he gets acclimated to his new team, but we don't expect to see him play against his former team in the first week of the NFL preseason. The Raiders recently re-signed QB Chase Garbers, which indicates Garoppolo likely won't be playing on Sunday. There's more risk and not much to gain by sending Garoppolo out there for a meaningless preseason game as he recovers from foot surgery.

Meanwhile, San Francisco's Brock Purdy was also cleared for action after having his throwing arm surgically repaired. But it's also unlikely we see him play. Still, San Francisco is in a much better spot at QB for this game than the Raiders. The 49ers have recently signed Sam Darnold and former top pick Trey Lance who are expected to see plenty of snaps and are in the midst of competing for a backup or perhaps a starting job if Purdy's health remains a question going forward. Given how much more stability the 49ers have on offense at the QB position, we like the 49ers to cover -3.5 (-115) at BetMGM Sportsbook

On the other side, the Raiders will likely use fourth-round rookie QB Aidan O'Connell to shoulder the early offensive load to see how he fares in his first NFL game action. But we prefer to back the 49ers, who will have experienced QBs with starting experience looking to make a positive difference on Sunday.

Best Betting Pick: ⭐ 49ers -3.5 (-115) at BetMGM Sportsbook

⭐ Over 36 (-110) at FanDuel

For much of the same reason we like the 49ers to cover in this spot, we also are looking at taking the over on the total of 36. San Francisco coach Kyle Shannahan has an offensive background and will want to see what both Trey Lance and Sam Darnold are capable of with extended snaps during the preseason. This will likely mean more passes and an aggressive offensive game plan to test their abilities. He's not sending them out there to hand the ball off.

Las Vegas head coach Josh McDaniels is another offensive-minded head coach, who will also want to see O'Connell get some passing reps in. The Raiders also selected tight end Michael Mayer at No. 35 in the NFL draft, and the rookie tight end should help bolster the offense, making the over of 36 (-110) at FanDuel our bet for the total.

Las Vegas also had one of the worst defenses last year, giving up the seventh-most points in the league (418). Expect the 49ers to put up points against what will likely be a porous defense featuring non-starters that will have to face Darnold and Lance. Las Vegas' seventh overall pick in the draft, defensive end Tyree Wilson, will also miss the game due to a foot fracture.

Best Betting Pick: Over 36 (-110) at FanDuel
