What is theScore Bet?

theScore app first launched in 2007 as a source of real-time sports scores, stats, and other news. After PASPA was struck down in 2018, Score Media & Gaming launched theScore Bet online in New Jersey.

By the end of 2021, Penn had purchased theScore app for approximately $2 billion.

theScore Bet operated in several U.S. states, including Colorado, Indiana, Iowa, and New Jersey, until the summer of 2022, when it withdrew from the U.S. to focus solely on Canadian sports betting markets.

Now, Penn Entertainment is bringing theScore Bet back to the United States.

When is theScore Bet Launching in the U.S.?

ESPN and Penn Entertainment announced that they have mutually agreed to terminate their U.S. online sports betting operations, effective December 1. At that time, Penn will rebrand its online sports betting service to theScore Bet.

With the rebrand, theScore Bet will return to the U.S. market by replacing ESPN BET in the jurisdictions in which it holds licenses.

Why Is ESPN BET Shutting Down?

In August 2023, Penn Entertainment agreed to a 10-year, $150 million deal to make ESPN its exclusive online sports betting partner in the US. The agreement included a provision that allowed either party to terminate the deal after the third year if specific market share performance thresholds were not met. Since late 2023, ESPN BET has owned just 3% of the market share across the U.S., trailing behind giants like DraftKings and FanDuel.

Penn Entertainment CEO & President Jay Snowden said in a release: “Although we made significant progress in improving our product offering and building a cohesive ecosystem with ESPN, we have mutually and amicably agreed to wind down our collaboration.”

The rebrand to theScore Bet will be the second time in just over two years that Penn will try to break into online U.S. sports betting in a significant way.

What Will Happen to Your Existing ESPN BET Account?

For existing ESPN BET Sportsbook customers, the ESPN BET brand will be discontinued. All pending bets and PENN Play rewards points will be transferred to theScore Bet. Your ESPN BET account information will remain the same with theScore. The ESPN BET app will become theScore Bet app, so you won’t even need to download a new app.

There’s nothing additional ESPN BET users will need to do to move over their accounts.
