WNBA Best Bets Today: Phoenix Mercury vs. Los Angeles Sparks

  • Date:  Wednesday, August 23, 10 PM EDT
  • Location: Entertainment and Sports Arena, Washington D.C.
  • TV:  NBA TV
  • My best betSparks -9.5 (-110) at BetMGM
Betting MarketPhoenix MercuryLos Angeles Sparks
ATS-9.5 (-110) +9.5 (-110)
TotalsOver 155.5 (-105) Under 155.5 (-115)
Moneyline(+370)(-520)

It's hard to want to back the Phoenix Mercury on Tuesday given who will not be playing. Brittney Griner, Diana Taurasi and Shey Peddy are all not playing, which means the Mercury will be without three rotation players and their top two scorers in Griner and Taurasi. Combined, Griner and Taurasi average 33 of the team's 77 points.

The absences with the Mercury have us liking Sparks -9.5 (-110) at BetMGM. Los Angeles appears to be playing some of its best ball as of late. The Sparks just beat the Las Vegas Aces on the road on Saturday, 78-72, giving the defending champions their first home loss of the regular season.

First-year coach Curt Miller appears to have the Sparks playing better as of late, and we expect them to handle the depleted Mercury tonight.

WNBA Best Prop No. 1: Nneka Ogwumike Over 20.5 Points (-110) at bet365

⭐  Nneka Ogwumike Over 20.5 Points (-110) at bet365

Nneka Ogwumike has been one of the most consistent players as of late, scoring between 17 and 20 points in each of her last six games. We're expecting another stellar performance tonight against a Mercury team that will be down its best post defender in Griner.

We like Ogwumike Over 20.5 Points (-110) at bet365. In her last two games against Phoenix, Ogwumike has scored 21 and 20 points against Phoenix, and that was with Griner in the lineup. Without her, Phoenix's post defense takes a hit with only Megan Gustafson listed as the other center on the team's roster, and she's known primarily for her abilities on the offensive end.

Ogwumike is coming off a 19-point performance against the Aces, who feature one of the top defensive frontcourt in the league. Ogwumike made 7 of 11 shots, and we expect her to continue her offensive success against the Mercury.

Recommended Bet: Ogwumike Over 20.5 Points (-110) at bet365

WNBA Best Prop No. 2: Layshia Clarendon Under 11.5 Points (-104) at FanDuel

⭐  Layshia Clarendon Under 11.5 Points (-104) at FanDuel

Layshia Clarendon deserves credit for the run she's on. She scored 22 points in the win over the Ace and put up 16 points against the Atlanta Dream and 17 in the victory over the Indiana Fever. That's why her scoring prop is a little higher at 11.5, compared to her season-scoring average of 9.5 points.

Despite her recent run, we're going to go with Clarendon Under 11.5 Points (-104) at FanDuel. Before these last three games, Clarendon didn't score more than 11 points 10 straight games, with six of those being single-digit scoring efforts. Besides this recent stretch, Clarendon has only scored more than 11 points just one other time this season, and that was back on June 6 against the Seattle Storm.

With Griner out, there's also the likelihood the Sparks look to feed the post regularly, which may result in fewer shot opportunities for Clarendon and the guards on the outside.

Recommended Bet: Layshia Clarendon Under 11.5 Points (-104) at FanDuel
