New York Giants third-string quarterback Tommy “Cutlets” DeVito has the team on a three-game winning streak, and the nation is buzzing.

With Italian-American DeVito’s colorful nickname and winning ways, the New Jersey native has become a sensation in the nation’s largest media market, which serves a New York metro area starved for positive QB news regarding the Giants or Jets.

Even DeVito’s agent, Sean Stellato, has been front and center in his black pinstripe suit and fedora, recalling the crew that hung out at the Bada Bing with fictional New Jersey Mob boss Tony Soprano.

Tommy Cutlets T-shirts have become available online, some with the Italian hand gesture DeVirto and his agent use — raised clinched fingers meaning “What?” or “What do you want?” (Ma che vuoi), according to northjersey.com.

DeVito, who lives at his parents’ home in Jersey and cherishes his mom’s chicken cutlets, also has been on social media discussing favorite Italian foods, with a “chicken vodka parm sandwich” topping one list.

Betting Odds

Against this backdrop, the Giants (5-8) are vying for one of seven NFC playoff spots with four games to go, starting with a showdown on the road Sunday against the New Orleans Saints (6-7). Kickoff is at 1 p.m. ET.

The path doesn’t get easer for DeVito and the Giants. Two of the team’s final three games are matchups at home and away against last season's Super Bowl runner-up Philadelphia Eagles (10-3).

The Saints, also battling to make the playoffs, are favored in Sunday’s game against the Giants by 5.5 points at BetMGM Sportsbook.

Which Team Will Win?

DeVito, an undrafted rookie, was pressed into service a half dozen games ago after injuries to starter Daniel Jones and backup Tyrod Taylor. In six games, DeVito has thrown eight touchdown passes and three interceptions. His quarterback rating is 96.5.

In New Orleans, the Saints have struggled to find a signal caller in the Drew Brees mold and were hoping Las Vegas Raiders castoff Derek Carr would be the answer. That hasn’t happened.

Over the course of this season, Carr, battling injuries, has thrown 13 touchdown passes and seven interceptions. His quarterback rating is 89.4. Going into this weekend, Carr was recovering from injuries but was expected to play against the Giants.

Neither defense is superior. Both teams are in the bottom four in the league in sacks, with 23 each, but the Saints are third in the NFL in interceptions at 14. The Giants and five other teams are only one off from that number, with 13 team interceptions each.

With two non-elite teams battling to make the playoffs, this game could be one where analytics aren’t as vital as intangibles like late-season motivation.

In that case, especially if the veteran Carr plays, those taking part in NFL betting over the weekend can expect the Saints to cover the point spread, beating the Giants by at least a touchdown.
