Alamo Bowl 2022 Betting Guide
Since its first game in 1993, the Alamo Bowl has regularly fielded two of the better teams during the college football bowl season. The game features a top Pac-12 team taking on a premier Big 12 team. For the 2022 iteration, the No. 12 Washington Huskies will face the No. 20 Texas Longhorns. Expect plenty of points between these two high-scoring offenses.
Both teams will look to complete their turnarounds from a year before with a win to finish the season.
Previously, the two teams have faced off four times but have not met in 21 seasons. Texas leads the series 3-1.
Alamo Bowl 2022 Teams and News
Texas and Washington have had their ups and downs this season, but this could be an exciting matchup.
Texas has been hit harder by the transfer portal and NFL Draft declarations than Washington, but the Longhorns should have plenty of high end recruits to step up.
There should be good offers for this game on the best sports betting sites.
Betting on Washington at the Alamo Bowl
Washington (10-2) improved by six games following a disappointing 4-8 season a year ago. Much of the success can be attributed to transfer quarterback Michael Penix Jr. who came over from Indiana. Penix led the country with 4,345 yards passing, completing 330 of 500 of his attempts for 29 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Penix was reunited with Washington coach Kalen DeBoer, who was Penix’s offensive coordinator for a season at Indiana.
In a surprising move, Penix Jr. announced he was forgoing the NFL Draft and electing to return to Washington in 2023 while also taking part in the Alamo Bowl. As it stands, no other Huskies have announced their intentions to enter the NFL Draft and skip the bowl game, with some still on the fence.
Defensively, Washington boasts one of the better run defenses in the country, ranking 33rd in rushing yards per game (127) while surrendering just 3.54 yards per attempt. Defending the pass is where the Huskies struggle. Washington ranks 90th in passing yards allowed per contest (241.8).
A win for Washington would mark just the fifth time in program history a team recorded at least 11 wins in a season.
Betting on Texas at the Alamo Bowl
Texas coach Steve Sarkisian is set to face his old team. Sarkisian coached the Huskies to a 34-29 record from 2009 to 2013 before leaving for the USC job. Sarkisian has also been an architect of his own turnaround, going 9-3 this season following a 5-7 record last year.
It is expected Texas will be without two of its key offensive playmakers in running backs Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson who are opting out of the Alamo Bowl and will prepare for the NFL Draft. Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown is also reportedly going to opt-out.
Robinson was one of the top offensive players in the country, rushing for 1,580 yards and scoring 20 touchdowns while finishing second nationally in yards from scrimmage per game (157.8). In addition to Robinson, Johnson and Overshown, 10 other players entered the transfer portal and will not play. Those in the portal consist of younger backups and depth options, including backup quarterback Hudson Card.
With Robinson and Johnson not playing, it’ll give Texas a look at its backfield options for 2023, including Jonathon Brooks, who averaged 7.5 yards per carry on 24 attempts for 185 yards and four touchdowns in the limited action he saw this season.
Texas will attempt to expose Washington’s pass defense with Quinn Ewers. The former No. 1-rated recruit completed 56.6% of his passes for 1,808 yards and 14 touchdowns in his first full season of action.
Similar to Washington, Texas lacks a solid pass defense. The Longhorns ranked No. 88 in passing yards allowed per game (239), which could set up a quarterback showcase between Penix Jr. and Ewers.
Alamo Bowl Past Results
With the tie-in between the Pac-12 and Big 12, this has been a high scoring and entertaining game through the years.
Both conferences are known for scoring a lot of points and, well, sometimes known for allowing even more. Buckle up, this should be fun.
Best Odds Available for the Alamo Bowl
With the best betting apps posting odds for college football bowl games, it’s important to find the best number and odds possible.
Alamo Bowl Betting Line Tips
Since this game was announced, Texas has been listed as a favorite as high as -5.5, but with opt-outs expected, the spread has fallen to as low as -4 at DraftKings.
Alamo Bowl Moneyline Odds
With a moneyline wager, you remove the spread and just pick a winner straight up. However, you will find some odds that may not offer as lucrative a payout because of how favored one team is over another.
You will find Texas listed at -280 on Caesars and -190 at DraftKings, whereas the Huskies will be +152 and +160 on those same platforms. For Texas, with this negative line, this means you will need to make bets in that amount to win $100.
I'm going with Washington and the plus money in a high-scoring game where it could come down to whichever quarterback has the ball last. Penix Jr. has arguably been one of the best quarterbacks in the country and is set to go against one of the worst passing defenses in the country.
His announcement to play in the Alamo Bowl has the potential to energize the Huskies and become just the fifth team in program history to win 11 games in a season. Penix’s decision has already motivated veteran defensive tackle Tuli Letuligasenoa to take part in the Alamo Bowl and return next season as well.
Give me the motivated team over the one that has multiple players opting out and electing to go to the NFL Draft, especially when Texas is losing an impact player like Robinson.
Bet365 and the Superbook have the best Washington moneyline odds at +170 right now.
Alamo Bowl Point Spread Odds
Regardless of where you look for college bowl game spreads, the line on this game looks to be locked in between 4 and 5.5 in both directions. Generally speaking, the line on this will be -110 for both the Longhorns and the Huskies, give or take a few points.
If you are picking Washington to win, you also believe it will cover. BetRivers has the best spread number on the Huskies at +5.5.
Alamo Bowl Over/Under Odds
Both teams average high point totals, pushing the over/under betting line on this one at either 68 or 69. We have not seen this total go higher or lower than either of those numbers. Like with the spread, the general line for either the over or under is around -110, give or take a few points.
Two bad passing defenses plus two quality quarterbacks should result in plenty of scoring opportunities for both teams. If it becomes an aerial show, expect plenty of first downs and quick drives.
At 68 on Bet365, it’s one of the higher totals but both explosive offenses have the potential to run it up against porous defenses.
