What Markets Can I Bet On In New Jersey?

NJ gambling sites features more mobile/online sportsbooks than any other state in the U.S. and bettors can bet in markets that range from professional sports such as the NFL and NBA to college sports to even the Academy Awards and Emmys. Excluded though are any events involving colleges located in New Jersey. The kinds of bets available at top NJ sportsbooks range from the standard moneyline, spread and totals betting to more exotic bets such as parlays, live betting and teasers.

Moneyline

A moneyline bet focuses only on the straight-up winner of the contest, which means there’s no point spread involved so it doesn’t matter how many points the winner or loser scores so long as the bettor makes the right pick. The negative number is the favorite and the positive number is the underdog. Winnings are based on $100.For example, if NFL betting sites are offering odds of New York Jets -350 vs. Dallas Cowboys +225, a bettor would place a $350 bet on the Jets to win $100. Conversely, a $100 bet on the Cowboys would return $225

Spread

The point spread is set by the bookmaker and handicaps the favorite in order to encourage more bets on the underdog. For point-spread bets, it’s not really about who wins the game but by how many points. For example, for New York Jets -7 vs. Dallas Cowboys, the Jets have to win by more than seven points for bettors backing them to win their bets.

Total O/U

The total O/U isn’t about who wins or loses but how many total points are scored by both teams. When betting the total O/U (sometimes called over/under or totals) market, bettors back whether they think the total number of points will be over or under the number set by the bookmaker. So, in NBA betting, if the total is 232 and you bet the over, you would win if the teams combined to score 233 or more points, even if the game goes to overtime.

Single

A single bet is the the most common type of bet. A single bet is a straight bet on the outcome of an event and returns are determined based on the amount staked and odds offered by the bookmaker.

Parlay

A parlay is a group of bets made together in which the bettor has to get every bet correct in order to win the parlay. Parlay bets are difficult to win because just one wrong pick can lose the entire parlay. However, the winnings are exponentially bigger than single bets.

Sports Betting

Sports betting has become very popular in New Jersey after the state legalized it following the U.S. Supreme Court overturning the federal ban on sports gambling in May 2018. Sports betting includes any bets made on any sport, and there are many online and mobile sportsbooks in New Jersey that offer bettors safe and legal ways to bet.

Player Props

Player props are propositional bets on any outcome beyond the traditional offerings that usually include moneylines, points spreads and total O/U bets. Bookmakers offer player props on all sorts of outcomes depending on the sport and bettor interest. For example, one popular player prop during the NFL season is how many passing TDs a quarterback throws during his next game.

Period Betting

Period betting is popular in NHL betting but is also loosely applied to other sports as well. During the NHL season, bookmakers offer period betting for how many points one team will be up on the opponent after a particular period in the game. NHL games have three periods, so there’s plenty of period betting action all season when the puck drops. In other sports, “period Betting” might be a proposition on how many runs are scored in a baseball game in the “period” up until the fifth inning and then after the fifth inning. In NFL games, “period betting” is really betting on quarters or halftime scores.

Live Betting

Live betting, also known as in-play betting, has become incredibly popular as sports betting technology has advanced. Live betting is any type of bet offered by bookmakers while the game is still in progress. Many online/mobile bookmakers in New Jersey offer live betting for various sporting events, and the right bet placed at the right time can lead to huge winnings.

Cash Outs

Some bookmakers offer cash outs which allow bettors to accept winnings for a bet during an event that hasn’t completed yet, either in full or partial. Cash outs are great options for bettors when they aren’t sure they placed a winning bet or simply want to limit risk in their portfolio.

Teasers

Teasers are option in parlay bets that allow a certain amount of points in the bettors favor on the point spreads involved in their parlay. Teasers are a great way to keep parlay bets alive, but using them also lowers the overall payout for winning parlays.

Futures

Futures are bets placed on any type of event in the future. Futures are usually centered on the outcomes of entire seasons and are very popular because they usually come with heavy returns. Betting on the Super Bowl winner at the start of the season isn’t easy, but the winnings are much larger when done that far in advance.

Hedging

Hedging is an advanced betting strategy used by bettors that involves placing bets on different outcomes than the original bet that was made in order to secure a guaranteed profit regardless of the final result. Bettors good at hedging keep up with how lines move, when they move and also keep meticulous track of all possible outcomes and expected returns.
