Future Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees is joining sports gambling operator PointsBet as its “global brand ambassador” in a deal that will also make Brees a significant shareholder with an equity stake in the company, PointsBet announced Wednesday.

Making the Brees association with PointsBet Sportsbook even more interesting is that Brees, who retired after last NFL season, will be beginning a broadcasting career with NBC Sports. PointsBet is now the official sports betting partner of NBC Sports in a deal that was announced last year.

How Partnership Will Work

Among Brees’ involvement will be to star in and help develop original content for PointsBet as well as participate in watch parties. The former QB will also be involved in developing marketing and promotional concepts.

"I am excited to team up with PointsBet, a leader in the future of sports entertainment built off elite technology," Brees said in a news release. "Sports betting is growing across the country and will positively impact sports engagement, and I am proud to be at the forefront alongside PointsBet and NBC Sports."

With NBC Sports, Brees will be an NFL studio analyst for Football Night in America, work as a game analyst for Notre Dame football, and be involved with coverage of other large events, such as the Olympics and Super Bowl LVI.

Founded in Australia, PointsBet is challenging the likes of DraftKings Sportsbook, FanDuel Sportsbook and BetMGM Sportsbook in the fiercely competitive U.S. sports wagering market and has a presence in Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan and New Jersey.

"Today is a massive day for our company as we welcome Drew Brees into the PointsBet family," said Johnny Aitken, PointsBet USA CEO. "Drew is renowned for his tireless work ethic and achieved great success in his career regardless of the obstacles in front of him, possessing the scrappy, well-prepared challenger, win-at-all-costs mentality that embodies PointsBet's DNA.

“We look forward to collaborating for years to come and integrating Drew across our portfolio to complement PointsBet's market-leading technology infrastructure and strategic approach to the competitive sports betting space."

Benefits for PointsBet

As a partner with NBC Sports, PointsBet can reach audiences through NBC Sports’ many platforms, including gameday integrations across NBC Sports Regional Networks. In addition, PointsBet's full Spanish-language functionality will reach Hispanic sports fans via Telemundo Deportes and Telemundo broadcast stations.

Helping to separate PointsBet from the sports wagering pack is its “PointsBetting” wagering product which allows bettors to leverage a wager. As an explainer, PointsBet offers this on its website: “If your bet wins by one point (or unit), you would win 1 x your bet amount (stake). If your bet wins by 2 units, you win 2 x stake. If your bet wins by 10 units, you win 10 x stake. Conversely, if you lose by 1 unit, you would lose 1 x stake. Lose by 10 units, lose 10 x stake.”

The PointsBet involvement with NBC Sports is significant. Among key financial details: a total committed marketing spend of $393 million over the five years of the deal; incentives paid to NBCUniversal, the parent company of NBC Sports, for customer referrals, as well as an equity interest in PointsBet.

In return, PointsBet enjoys being the exclusive provider of odds, props and trends for NBCSN and Golf Channel and their digital properties, along with Peacock, NBCUniversal’s streaming service, and NBC Sports podcasts; being the official partner of the NBC Sports Predictor app, which has more than 1.1 million downloads, and also Rotoworld, NBC Sports’ daily fantasy and sports betting digital property, will use PointsBet odds.

Several years ago, Brees was an endorser of daily fantasy company, FantasyDraft, which was later acquired by Money Knife Fight.
