Las Vegas MLB Stadium Under Construction

Since leaving Oakland at the end of the 2024 season, the team has been known only as the Athletics, without any city designation. Beginning last season, the team has played its home games at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento. That stadium also is the home of the Sacramento River Cats, the San Francisco Giants Triple-A affiliate. The Athletics currently wear a Sacramento city patch on one uniform sleeve and a Las Vegas patch on the other.

In 2028, the Athletics plan to move into a stadium on the Las Vegas Strip being built where the Tropicana hotel-casino once stood. The Tropicana, once one of the most mobbed-up casinos in the Las Vegas Valley, first opened in 1957 and was demolished in 2024. The Athletics website has a "Construction Cam" page showing live images of the stadium being built.

The Athletics' presence will add to the city's effort in branding itself as the Sports and Entertainment Capital of the World. That effort includes other professional sports teams now making their home in Las Vegas, including the NFL’s Raiders, NHL’s Golden Knights and WNBA’s Aces. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has indicated Las Vegas could get a franchise in that league at some point.

This is not the first time the Athletics will have played regular season home games in Las Vegas. In 1996, while their home stadium in Oakland was undergoing a renovation, the A’s played six regular-season home games at 9,300-seat Cashman Field near downtown Las Vegas. The opponents were the Toronto Blue Jays and Detroit Tigers. The A’s went 2-4 during the six-game stretch from April 1-7.

Athletics Away, Home Openers

Earlier this week, Athletics pitchers and catchers reported to spring training in Mesa, Arizona. The full squad reports on Monday, Feb. 16. The team’s Cactus League opener is set for Feb. 21 against the Chicago White Sox at Camelback Ranch in Phoenix.

On March 27, the Athletics open the regular season on the road against the defending American League champion Toronto Blue Jays.

The Athletics’ regular-season home opener is April 3 in West Sacramento against the Houston Astros.
