North Carolina Sports Betting Coming Soon: What to Expect

March 11, 2024 is the day when sports betting in North Carolina will make its maiden appearance.

“Yeah, you missed the football season.  Yeah, you missed the Super Bowl, but you’ll get the ACC tournament, the entirety of the NCAA tournament, and having the first two rounds at the Spectrum Center creates an environment that gets people excited.”

Let’s look into what is going to happen and what is expected of this historical day of sports betting in North Carolina.

What are we Expecting on March 11?

With the imminent commencement of sports betting in North Carolina, a total of 12 sports betting operators are gearing up to extend their offerings to the state. Currently, eight operators have submitted their applications to conduct operations in North Carolina. The list of applicants includes renowned names such as FanDuel NC, BetMGM, DraftKings, Fanatics, bet365, ESPN BET, Caesars, and Underdog Sports, all vying for online sports betting licenses in North Carolina.

Every operator is eagerly striving to secure their portion of the legalized sports betting market, specifically in the realm of College Sports. Furthermore, as the entire industry is duly regulated, the State of North Carolina will also have its own vested interest in this market. Moreover, the betting experience is designed to be exceptionally user-friendly!

“It’s now easier to place a bet than it is to get an Uber,” said Shannon Sommerville, sports betting analyst, host, and sports reporter.  “And that’s kind of the situation.  It’s going to be so normalized that we’re just hopping on our phone during a live game to place bets."

Bill King, the lead contributor to Sports Business Journal stated, “The NFL will make about $1 billion over the course of five years from its three sportsbook partnerships, and that doesn’t include the teams who have deals.”

The industry of sports betting in North Carolina has created a certain anticipation, particularly when it comes to the tax revenues it will generate and the profits it will yield for the companies operating these services.

Estimations suggest that North Carolina has the potential to generate approximately $100 million in tax profits within the first five years. However, King holds the viewpoint that this figure could surpass expectations, resulting in a greater influx of tax revenue.

King added, “People bet $1 billion the first month in Ohio. I’m not saying it’s going to be like that in North Carolina, but it will be in the hundreds of millions of dollars.”

Will Sport Betting affect businesses?

The legalization of sports betting is unlikely to result in a significant increase in job opportunities, as the majority of betting activities will take place online. The process of legalizing sports betting in North Carolina has been a prolonged one. In fact, it is such a significant development that one company has decided to set up also in North Carolina.

The founders of Gambling.com Group, who hail from North Carolina, are now establishing their business in a new location in the lower South End.

While they have been present in Charlotte for some time, they are now seeking a more stable setting to settle down in. Max Bichsel, Executive Vice President of Gambling.com, explains that it is advantageous for them to have access to talent in North Carolina, as it is the most logical and suitable location for their business.

In addition to this, the sports betting industry is actively targeting a new demographic. Traditionally, the audience for sports consists mainly of older individuals, yet those who engage in sports betting are generally younger. Consequently, sports leagues and service providers are making efforts to appeal to this younger demographic.

As we approach March 11, we eagerly anticipate the unveiling of various promotional offers from North Carolina's sportsbooks. We patiently wait for these exciting North Carolina sportsbook promos to be launched.
