Henry de Bromhead Runners, Odds and Entries

Henry De Bromhead’s 2024 Cheltenham Festival squad doesn’t have the standout stars that it had in the recent past.

But the Knockeen-based trainer still has a squad that would be the envy of most trainers. This year, De Bromhead will be looking to add to his 21 Cheltenham Festival successes.

Envoi Allen is expected to put up a bold defence of his Ryanair Chase crown. He’s not the only one, though, so let's take a closer look at his top five chances.

Henry De Bromhead Top Five Cheltenham Festival 2024 Chances

Slade Steel – Supreme Novices’ Hurdle - 1.30 Tuesday

Progressive novice Slade Steel had the misfortune to bump into Ballyburn in the 2m, Grade 1 at Leopardstown, but even in defeat the runner-up enhanced his reputation.

Slade Steel travelled as well as the winner throughout, but couldn’t match Ballyburn's change of gear late on.

Back up in trip and with more to come, Slade Steel looks a strong contender for the Supreme according to betting sites.

Monty’s Star – Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase - 2.10 Wednesday

The switch to fences could be the making of Monty’s Star, who jumped extremely well en-route to an emphatic success over Three Card Brag at Punchestown on New Year’s Eve.

A strong stayer, the Brown Advisory looks the right race for him, especially if they can get some soft ground, and it’s simply a case of whether he has the class to mix it with a horse like Fact To File, who is surely going to be hard to beat in this race.

It’s easy enough to see Monty’s Star hitting the frame.

Minella Indo – Cross Country Chase - 4.10 Wednesday

Minella Indo is the 2/1 favourite on betting apps for the Cross Country Chase and the shortest price of any Henry De Bromhead runner at the festival.

The 2021 Gold Cup winner is still capable of operating at a high level, as he showed by winning a Grade 3 at Punchestown on seasonal return.

Given a ‘sighter’ of Cheltenham’s Cross Country course in December, where he appeared to take to the new test well, he’s been kept fresh for this target.

It would be no surprise if he wins, although this is no walkover given the likely presence of top staying chasers like Coko Beach and Galvin.

Gabbys Cross – Pertemps Network Final - 2.10 Thursday

Gabbys Cross qualified for the Pertemps Final with a very encouraging second behind Jody Ted at Punchestown in November, where he stayed on well from off the pace, but he couldn’t get to a well-handicapped winner.

Rated much higher over fences, where he’s been often campaigned, it’s interesting that the De Bromhead team are going down the Pertemps route, because there will surely be better treated runners in the race than this nine-year-old.

However, according to the latest Cheltenham odds, he’ll be suited by the likely strong pace so don’t be surprised if he comes home well and hits the frame.

Envoi Allen – Ryanair Chase - 2.50 Thursday

Envoi Allen was a two and three-quarter length winner of last year’s Ryanair Chase and although he’s been beaten on each start since, he still ran to a really high level when second to Gerri Colombe at Down Royal in November.

Taken out of the Grade 2 Horse & Jockey Hotel Chase at Thurles in January because he had been found to be coughing, recent reports have been very encouraging about his wellbeing.

So, providing ground conditions don’t deteriorate badly at Cheltenham, he can be expected to post a strong defence of his crown.
