Mobile Betting Goes Live March 11

The season finale on March 9 tips off two days before mobile sports betting becomes legal in North Carolina.

On March 11 at noon ET, people at least 21 years old can begin using mobile apps and computers to place sports bets from anywhere in the state. Beginning at noon on March 1, bettors can go onto licensed apps and register in preparation for the go-live date.

After the state approves the mobile sportsbook operators that have applied for a license, the names of the licensed operators will appear on the North Carolina State Lottery Commission website. By Feb. 3, none had been approved. According to the website, those licenses are “coming soon.”

“Applications are currently under review,” the website states.

After mobile sports betting goes live, in-person wagering at commercial brick-and-mortar sites will begin at some undetermined future date, state officials said.

Currently, in-person sports betting is legal at the state’s three tribal casinos: Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort, Harrah’s Cherokee Valley River Casino and Catawba Two Kings Casino.

ACC, March Madness Tournament Schedules

Though legal mobile sports betting doesn’t begin until two days after the March 9 UNC-Duke season finale, mobile wagering will be up and running in time for the ACC tournament and March Madness.

Below are key dates:

March 12-16: ACC Men’s basketball tournament at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.

NCAA Men’s March Madness basketball tournament

March 17: Selection Sunday

March 19-20: First four

March 21-22: First round

March 28-29: Sweet 16

March 30-31: Elite Eight

April 6: Final Four in Glendale, Arizona

April 8: NCAA championship game in Glendale, Arizona.

In addition to statewide interest in the basketball tournaments, fans and bettors in North Carolina are expected to be focused on college baseball during that period.

The collegiate baseball season begins in mid-February, with the national title game taking place in June. North Carolina has five teams in the preseason D1 Baseball Top 25 poll, including No. 1 ranked Wake Forest.
