The 2023 college football season already is off to a surprising start, highlighted by upsets that include LSU’s loss to Florida State and Clemson’s loss to Duke.

With sports betting kicking off Sept. 7 in Kentucky, bettors are able to wager on sports legally in 35 states and Washington, D.C.

However, several states with legal sports betting prohibit wagers on collegiate sports. Others have placed restrictions on college sports betting.

College Sports Betting Banned Or Limited

According to current information, below are the legal sports-wagering states that prohibit or restrict bets on college sports. Some allow bets on out-of-state college teams but not on in-state teams. Others allow in-person college sports betting at brick-and-mortar locations but not on mobile apps.

Bettors are encouraged to check restrictions in each state.

Southeast Last Major Region With Sports Betting Gaps

In collegiate sports, college football betting attracts major attention nationwide.

College football is especially popular in the states that have athletic teams in the Southeastern Conference. Schools from the SEC have won the last four FBS championships: LSU, Alabama and Georgia (twice). The region's teams also are competitive in the annual NCAA women's and men's March Madness basketball tournaments.

However, of the 12 states that have universities in the SEC (including Texas and Oklahoma next year), all sports betting is banned in seven states. That makes the Southeast the largest geographic area in the nation where sports betting is illegal in several regional states. Currently, Louisiana is the only Gulf Coast state from Texas to Florida with off-site mobile sports betting.
