Pennsylvania Falls Shy Of iGaming Record As September Gambling Revenue Climbs

Pennsylvania's gambling market posted another solid month in September, with total revenue increasing by almost 6% year-over-year.

Although it missed out on setting a new record for iGaming revenue, the state’s gambling industry is still demonstrating strong growth and resilience.

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board reported that total gaming revenue was $535.8million in September, up 5.9% from $505.9m in the same month last year.

Although it was 8% below the record high of $582.3m set in August, September’s results show strong contributions from a number of gaming verticals, especially online gaming.

iGaming Surges Past $230m

Once more, the highlight of the month was iGaming. Revenue from online casino and poker was $233.4m,an increase of 32.1% from September 2024.

The vast majority was generated by online slots with $181.9m, growing 37.1% year-over-year. Of the total, web-based table games contributed $50m, and online poker netted $2.3m.

Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course held its position as the top operator, generating $87.7m in iGaming revenue, up 31% from the previous year.

Valley Forge Casino Resort came in second at $66.4m, a 40.8% leap and Rivers Casino Philadelphia took third with $35.4m, up 12.5% year over year.

These improvements demonstrate that iGaming is now a staple within Pennsylvania's gambling landscape, continually mitigating losses in traditional gaming formats.

Even though revenue declined, betting activity was still strong. The amount of money wagered increased 4.8% to $850.5m.

Of this, online wagering accounted for $810.1m, whilst retail sports books contributed $40.4m.

FanDuel and Valley Forge Casino Resort continued to lead the market, bringing in $15.9m in revenue from $297.6m wagers for a 5.34% hold.

Land-Based Gaming Softens

Pennsylvania’s land-based casinos had a mixed bag.

Slot machine revenue fell 1.5% from a year ago to $194m, while retail table games remained steady at $73.4m.

Video gaming terminals, located mainly in truck stops, generated $29.7m, decreasing slightly by 0.6%.

Fantasy sports contests saw modest growth, up 5.4% to $2m in revenue.

Tax Contributions Stay Strong

Despite some sector fluctuations, Pennsylvania’s tax revenue from gambling remained strong.

The state took in $227.9m in September, with $106.1m of that coming from iGaming, $96.6m from land-based slots, $12.3m from table games and $10.7m from sports betting.

Overall, Pennsylvania remains one of the top gambling states in the country, with iGaming being a major contributor to its rise in revenue.

With new platforms rolling out, and player activity intensifying, the Keystone State looks poised to break new records before the year is out.
