Michigan Casinos Online Captured 29% of the National Market Share in 2023

The final iGaming revenue numbers for 2023 are finally published from across the country, and the results show that the Wolverine State ranks second in the nation with a 29.4% market share. The online gambling industry in the Great Lakes State experienced a lot of success in 2023, hitting new monthly revenue records, and the collective revenue of Michigan casinos online grew by 21.6% compared to 2022.

The bar is set high for 2024, but the fact that Michigan managed to conquer nearly a quarter of the national market share indicates this iGaming market is on an upward trajectory. The success train is pulled by BetMGM, DraftKings, and FanDuel, a trio of operators that collectively accounts for $1,3 billion from the $1,9 billion the market produced in revenue for 2023.

Taking Second Place By a Slight Margin

Michigan assumed the second position by a slight margin, considering New Jersey also has a 29.4% market share. Yet, the dollar value shows that operators in the Great Lakes States took in $1,923,857,570 in revenue, while online casinos in the Garden State can brag with $1,923,742,057 in combined revenue.

The simple subtraction reveals that Michigan came on top in the race with New Jersey by $115,513. A photo-finish type of event was expected between these two states, considering the monthly revenue numbers throughout the year indicate these markets were on a similar trajectory.

Most of the biggest brands in the industry, such as DraftKings, BetMGM, FanDuel, Caesars Palace, and BetRivers, are active in both states and offer a similar repertoire of games and bonuses. However, there were only 15 Michigan casinos online in 2023, while New Jersey is a more sprawling market with 29 operators vying for players' attention.

The demographics favor the Wolverine State at 7,9 million adult residents compared to 7,2 million adult residents in the Garden State. One big reason for Michigan outperforming New Jersey might be that online casinos contribute 82% of Michigan's gambling revenue. The picture differs in New Jersey, where online casinos produce 66% of the overall revenue.

The situation with the other four markets in the nation reveals Pennsylvania is on top with a 32.2% market share. Aside from the big three, the remaining three states are not making a significant impact from a national perspective. Connecticut secured a 6.3% market share, West Virginia took a 2.4% share, and Delaware with 0.2%.

Can Michigan Outperform Pennsylvania in 2024

Michigan does not have the workforce to overtake Pennsylvania, with the latter having 5 million more residents than the former. Despite that, Michigan is emerging as one of the best markets in the nation for online casino gambling.

Software vendors increasingly prefer to debut their new games in the Wolverine State, such as the recent example with Star Trek: The Next Generation at BetMGM Casino. Operators constantly update their apps, offering more compelling Michigan online casino promotions and immersive games. Michigan had a good year in 2023, which the market can build upon.
