What Happens When You Win: Taxes and Payouts

Online slot jackpots in regulated US markets are typically paid as a single lump sum credited to the winning account, rather than structured as an annuity like some lottery jackpots.

Reporting

As of January 1, 2026, casinos must issue IRS Form W-2G for slot machine and bingo wins of $2,000 or more, up from the $1,200 threshold that had stood since 1977. The change comes from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, and the new threshold will adjust for inflation each year.

Winning less than $2,000 does not make a win tax-free – all gambling winnings are taxable income regardless of size or whether a W-2G is issued.

Withholding

This is where slot jackpots differ from lottery or sweepstakes prizes. Slot machine, bingo and keno winnings are not subject to the IRS's automatic 24% withholding, no matter how large the jackpot.

That automatic withholding applies specifically to lotteries, sweepstakes, wagering pools and sports wagering over $5,000.

In practice, a seven-figure slot jackpot like those in the table above generally arrives without any tax already withheld. The winner is responsible for planning for that liability – often through estimated payments – rather than having it deducted automatically at payout.

The one exception is backup withholding: if a winner does not provide a valid taxpayer ID, the casino must withhold 24% regardless of game type.

Tax Rate

Gambling winnings are taxed as ordinary income at the winner's marginal federal rate (10%–37% for 2026), on top of whatever the relevant state charges.

State treatment varies widely and should be checked separately. On a multi-million-dollar win, the effective federal rate typically lands close to the top bracket.
