The start of summer provided some downward trends for New Jersey sports betting, but one number showed a promising sign.

According to figures released by the state on Friday, New Jersey sports betting produced $766.9 million in total sports handle, down 5.8% from May’s $814.27 million and up 364.7% from June 2020’s $165 million, which was affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

One promising sign was June’s overall sports betting revenue, which came in at $71.3 million, up 34.7% from May ($52.9 million) and up 463.9% from June 2020 ($12.6 million), the state report showed. The June hold was a high 9.3%, up from 6.5% in May.

And yet another promising number for NJ gambling was retail handle at brick-and-mortar sportsbooks, which was $83.9 million in June, up from $79.7 million in May. This certainly provides an indication that more people are going out and visiting facilities around the state with more and more vaccinations occurring to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Other Key NJ Numbers

Total gaming revenue for New Jersey in June was $392.84 million, up 5% from May’s $374.2 million and up 302.7% from June 2020 ($97.6 million). For the first six months of 2021, total gaming revenue was $2.11 billion compared to $1.03 billion over the same period last year, an increase of 105.7%, according to the state.

The state’s online casinos win was $107 million, down slightly by 1% from May (108.17 million), but up 26.1% from June 2020 ($84.9 million). Internet gaming win in the first six months of 2021 increased 50.0% to $634.2 million when compared to the prior period.

“Internet gaming revenue growth is slowing as visitors flock to the resort for in-person gaming during the summer tourism season,” said Jane Bokunewicz, faculty director of the Lloyd D. Levenson Institute of Gaming, Hospitality and Tourism (LIGHT) at Stockton University in Galloway. “However, the fact that it still continues to increase year-over-year suggests the market has not yet reached its full potential even as in-person gaming returns to full operations.

“Growth of both internet and brick and mortar gaming revenues demonstrates the importance of operators diversifying their offerings by providing both methods of gaming for their customers.”
