Nebraska has become the 34th state with legal and live sports betting, allowing in-person wagering but not mobile betting.

On June 22, the WarHorse Casino, a tribal racino in Lincoln, became the first outlet in the state to offer legal sports betting.  A telephone receptionist at the property told Gambling.com on Tuesday that sports betting is allowed at the site from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. CT.

The racino is owned by Ho-Chunk Inc., the economic development arm of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska.

At its opening, the WarHorse Casino in Lincoln was the only legal sports betting site up and running in Nebraska. Other racinos are expected to open sportsbooks soon, with kiosks and ticket windows.

No Online Sports Betting In Nebraska

Under state law, sports betting is limited to wagers placed in person at the state's six racinos, according to the Nebraska State Racing and Gaming Commission.

Mobile sports betting — the use of a cellphone or computer to place a bet — is still illegal across the state.

Nationwide, mobile sports betting is legal and live in 24 states and Washington, D.C. This includes four states that border Nebraska. These states are Wyoming, Colorado, Kansas and Iowa.

Across the county, mobile sports betting is legal but not live in five more states: Maine, Vermont, Kentucky, North Carolina and Florida.

In-State College Betting Outlawed

One of the first ceremonial bets placed at the WarHorse Casino last week was on the upcoming Aug. 31 NCAA football game between the visiting Nebraska Cornhuskers and Minnesota Golden Gophers, according to the Omaha World-Herald.

David Anderson, vice president of the Nebraska Horsemen’s Benevolent Protective Association, placed a $200 bet on Nebraska to win the game. Since the Cornhuskers are on the road for that game, the bet is legal. Currently, college football betting is not allowed on in-state games.

However, the June start to sports wagering gives bettors a chance to participate in NFL betting this season. Typically, NFL games are the most heavily wagered events in the country on a week-to-week basis.

In Nebraska, bettors are required to be age 21 or older. The minimum bet is $5.

The WarHorse Casino has partnered with the sports betting technology company Kambi to provide wagering platforms and betting odds, according to the newspaper.

Where Does The Money Go?

In Nebraska, sports betting revenue is taxed at 20%. The money the state receives is allocated as follows:

  • 70% to property tax relief
  • 25% to local governments where gambling is authorized
  • 2.5% to the general fund
  • 2.5% to problem gambling prevention and treatment
