Indiana September Sports Betting Handle Tops $200 Million

Boosted by football action, Indiana’s sportsbooks continued to set monthly records for handle and revenue in September.

September’s sports betting handle in Indiana totaled $207.45 million, up 22.7% from August’s $169.02 million. Revenue followed suit with adjusted gross revenue for sports wagering hitting $14.28 million up 45.2% from August’s $9.83 million.

The majority of sports betting in Indiana was done online and two operators, DraftKings and FanDuel, were the runaway Indiana sportsbook leaders in Internet wagering among nine online operators who offer online sports betting in the Hoosier State.

Of the total $207.45 million in sports gambling handle, $178.98 million (86.3%) was done online. And of that total Indiana sports betting handle, Draft Kings (in partnership with Ameristar Casino) accounted for $89.42 million and FanDuel (with Blue Chip Casino) accounted for $56.51 million. Combined, those two online operators accounted for 81.5% of the total Internet sports gambling handle.

Revenue-wise, Draft Kings had $3.18 million in gross receipts and FanDuel had $2.33 million.

Another operator has entered the market. On Sept. 17, theScore Bet app went live in Indiana, expanding its offering to mobile sports betting customers. TheScore Bet is now active in three states, having recently launched in Colorado and debuting in New Jersey last year.

Other Key Numbers In Indiana

Although making up a far smaller portion of Indiana’s total sports betting market, retail sports betting handle came in at $28.47 million, an increase of 13.4% from August’s $25.12 million.

Indiana’s total casino win — table games plus slots/electronic games — was $170.01 million and that was down 1.8% from August’s $173.13 million. Taxable AGR for gaming was $152.38 million, down 1.9% from August’s $155.33 million.

The state collected $34.25 million in total tax for September, including wagering, sports wagering and supplemental taxes. That was an increase of almost 9.4% from August’s $31.32 million.

Among various sports, not surprisingly football was king among individual sports accounting for $48.42 million in handle in September followed by basketball with $34.23 million and baseball with $30.46 million. Parlays accounted for $50.64 million of the action and “other” sports accounted for $43.05 million.

Midwest Strong

Another Midwest state that released its September sports betting numbers — Iowa — also set records. Like Indiana, Iowa saw its highest total sports betting handle, mobile handle and revenue for a single month in September.

Iowa recorded $72.4 million in total sports betting handle for September, up 43.9% from August’s $50.3 million. The mobile sports betting handle came in at $50 million and revenue was $5.2 million.

The leader in sports betting, New Jersey, in August reached a new U.S. record for total handle in a single month — $668 million. Nevada previously set the standard with $614.1 million in November 2019. New Jersey is scheduled to release its September numbers next week.

Indiana celebrated its one-year anniversary with an active sports betting market on Sept. 1 and saw its total handle eclipse $1 billion in July. Gov. Eric Holcomb placed the first legal wager in the state when the sports betting market officially opened.
