With more sports available to bet on, Oregon had an 84.1% increase in August total sports betting handle over July.

Oregon, which is limited by a lack of options beyond its lottery-run Scoreboard app, had $25,845,403 in total handle in August, according to figures posted Tuesday on the Oregon Lottery website. It had $14,042,425 in total sports handle in July. Oregon's August number still trails other states that have posted their August figures.

Oregon sports betting revenue in August amounted to $1,662,406, an increase of 65.7% over July’s $1,003,037.

The month-to-month increases in Oregon for the last three months are similar to what other states have seen as sports returned and casinos reopened. July’s total for Oregon almost doubled what it had in June. The June sports betting handle, with few sports being played, was $7,921,864, which was a slight increase over May.

The Oregon numbers aren’t as good as some states have been seeing since sports returned.

For example, West Virginia had a total sports handle in August of $40.4 million wagered, a 155% increase over July. Iowa saw $50.3 million wagered in August, a 120.1% increase over July. New Jersey set a U.S. record in August with $668 million wagered.

Thanks to the Portland Trail Blazers resuming their season in August, basketball was the most-bet sport in August with $13,997,597 in handle. It was followed by baseball ($4,426,427), soccer ($1,880,376), table tennis ($1,670,081) and hockey ($1,530,720), according to the state report.

Some Issues Remain in Oregon

The lines on Scoreboard have previously drawn scrutiny, and did again this past weekend on social media with the start of the NFL season. Some bettors posted on social media that they were having difficulty placing NFL bets on Scoreboard. College sports are not available on the Scoreboard app.

In August some bettors had trouble signing in on the Scoreboard app, prompting the lottery to send out a tweet:

Earlier in the year, the SBTech-powered Scoreboard had to be taken offline because of the cyberattack that hit SBTech. An Oregon Lottery spokesman at the time would not say how long the site was down and that no customer data was compromised.

Oregon has seen some of the same problems that states with lottery-run sports betting operations offering one option for consumers have had to deal with.
