Betting on sports online isn’t merely a growing fad. Consider that 85% of all legal NJ sports bets in 2019 were placed online. And in December 2019, the number was even higher - 88 percent. Simply put, it’s hard to beat the convenience of mobile sports betting. Bettors from neighboring areas (especially New York City) clearly agree - many travel to New Jersey to place their wagers, then head back home.
Mobile bettors have found sports betting both convenient and safe. Wagers can be made at any time, any day. The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement regulates NJ online sportsbooks and ensures the integrity of all legal operators.
NJ sports betting apps can be downloaded for free on both Apple and Android devices. The easiest way to download is from the website of the sports betting operator, such as FanDuel, DraftKings, William Hill or BetMGM. You can also usually download from the Apple App Store for iPhones and iPads, or from the Google Play Store for Android.
For those who prefer to wager from their home computer, you don’t have to download a sports betting app to wager. NJ sports betting sites are available through web browsers (Windows and Mac) with no download required.

New Jersey fought a seven-year, $9 million court battle with the four major professional sports leagues and the NCAA after NJ residents approved a sports betting referendum in 2011. It seemed like a longshot, and former Gov. Chris Christie and state lawmakers overcame several legal setbacks to keep the state’s sports betting aspirations alive.
In 2011, NJ voters approved a constitutional amendment to allow sports betting at NJ casinos and racetracks (both live and online) with 64 percent approval. Shortly after the vote, NJ lawmakers approved the Sports Wagering Act. The NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL and NCAA subsequently filed suit to prevent the act from becoming law, claiming it violated the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PAPSA), which prohibited sports wagering outside Nevada.
A U.S. district judge ruling upheld PAPSA, and Christie and NJ lawmakers went on to lose two subsequent appeals. With their legal avenues nearly exhausted, Christie and the state appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, which surprisingly agreed to hear the case.
On Dec. 4, 2017, each side presented one hour of oral arguments before the court. On May 14, 2018, the Supreme Court voted 6-3 to repeal PAPSA, paving the way for states to adopt and regulate sports betting on their own. Less than a month later, Murphy signed a new bill into law. On June 14, 2018, Murphy placed the first two legal sports bets in state history - a New Jersey Devils futures bet and a wager on Germany to win the World Cup. He lost both.
NJ online sportsbooks opened for business less than two months later.
The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement regulates sports betting and casino gaming in the state.
Bettors must be at least 21 years old.
At nearly all of the state's land-based casinos in Atlantic City; Meadowlands and Monmouth Park racetracks; and through any of the state's online sportsbooks, which accept both online and mobile wagering. About 85 percent of legal NJ sports wagers in 2019 were placed online through mobile sports betting apps or home computers.
Just about all sporting events, including all the major sports leagues (NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL); major college sports not played in New Jersey or involving New Jersey-based schools; individual sports including golf, tennis, boxing and mixed martial arts; auto racing; and a wide range of international sports. You can also bet on daily fantasy sports.
Sports wagers are not allowed on New Jersey-based college teams (such as Seton Hall and Monmouth) or on college events played in New Jersey. Betting on high school sports is also prohibited. The Golden Nugget cannot accept bets on games involving the Houston Rockets as the casino and NBA team are both owned by Tilman Fertitta.
Licenses are required for all casino owners and operators (along with casino employees). According to the state’s website, licensees must “meet the statutory requirements of good character, honesty and integrity and to keep the New Jersey casino industry free from organized crime.’’ Owners must have the "necessary financial stability" to operate.
Daily fantasy sports icon DraftKings launched NJ’s first online sportsbook on August 6, 2018, just a few months after a U.S. Supreme Court decision cleared the way.
All of the most popular betting options are available, including point spread bets, moneyline wagers, parlays, futures, teasers, over/unders, proposition bets and in-game wagering.
Yes. When sports betting in New Jersey was legalized in 2018, it included provisions for online and mobile wagering.
Yes. In-play wagering, in which bets are placed on a mobile sports betting app after an event or game has started, is one of the fastest growing segments of the industry. NJ online sportsbook operators use computer algorithms to set in-game wagering odds.
NJ online sportsbooks offer a wide range of bonuses, including a free bet to sign up; risk-free wagers; first-deposit bonus offers; matched deposits; odds boosts; and reload bonuses. Each bonus and promotion offer comes with its own terms and conditions, so be sure to check before you wager.
No. There is no residency requirement for online sports betting. But all wagers must be placed within the state of New Jersey. Geolocation technology tracks your location before allowing you to bet.
You can sign up on as many sites as you wish. While most initial bonus offers can be claimed only once, signing up at multiple sites allows you to claim multiple bonuses.
As sports betting continues to grow, NJ sportsbooks, casinos and pro sports teams and leagues have forged a variety of partnerships. Among the NJ-area teams with partnerships: New Jersey Devils – Caesars, FanDuel, Unibet, William Hill; New York Jets –888 Casino, MGM Resorts; Philadelphia 76ers – Caesars; Caesars casino also has an exclusive deal with the NFL.
No one deposit method works best for everybody. The most popular options are Play+ pre-paid debit cards; bank transfer; e-wallets such as PayPal and Neteller; PayNearMe at 7-Eleven and CVS stores around the state; and debit and credit cards, though many financial institutions still wrongly flag those transactions.
The legal sportsbooks are licensed by the New Jersey Division of Gambling Enforcement, which provides a badge for each sportsbook operator to display on its website or app. Legal NJ online sportsbooks are also required to have a responsible gaming policy in place. Offshore sportsbooks are unregulated and withdrawing funds from them may involve unnecessary risk because banks can’t knowingly engage in transactions with them.
At any of the city’s eight casinos except Caesars (which is adjacent and connected to Bally’s and its Wild Wild West Sportsbook). Two racetracks in the state, Monmouth Park in Oceanport and the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, also have sportsbooks.
There were 17 at the start of 2020, with more to come. Each land-based casino can have up to three online partners (skins). Some have only one or two, so there is room for expansion.
New Jersey sports betting generated $4.58 billion in handle in 2019, the second-highest figure in the nation behind Nevada ($5.3 billion). During three months of a four-month stretch in 2019, New Jersey outhandled Nevada in sports betting. Look for New Jersey’s numbers to climb past $5 billion in the next year or two, given neighboring New York’s lack of mobile sports betting.
Under New Jersey sports betting law, an 8.5% tax on sports betting revenue is assessed at land-based casinos, 13% for online and mobile wagers, and 14.25% for racetrack-based online sports revenue. As for sports bettors, all gambling winnings are considered taxable.
