NBA Rookie of the Year Odds and Predictions

1. Victor Wembanyama (+120) at DraftKings

The San Antonio Spurs unsurprisingly selected Victor Wembanyama with their No. 1 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. The 19-year-old Frenchman was a dominant force in Europe, and many predict Wembanyama will be a superstar in the NBA. Last season, Wemby was tallying 21.6 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 3.0 blocks per game in the French Pro A League. His footwork and ball control are remarkable for a 7-foot-4 guy, so Wembanyama is expected to lead the way for the lowly Spurs in his rookie season.

In his preseason debut, Wembanyama posted a line of 20 points, five rebounds, two steals, and a block in just 19 minutes on the floor. A few days later, Wemby led his team to a 120-104 victory over the Miami Heat, notching 23 points, four boards, four assists, and three blocks. Wembanyama is showing why his Rookie of the Year odds sit at +120 at DraftKings, and he’ll certainly learn a lot under Gregg Popovich during the season. The only thing I’m worried about is eventual load management, as the Spurs are not a playoff contender and will be careful with their new star.

⭐ Recommended Bet: Victor Wembanyama (+120) at DraftKings

2. Chet Holmgren (+325) at bet365

After missing the entire 2022-23 season due to a foot injury, Chet Holmgren is ready to rumble. The 7-foot-1 Gonzaga product was selected as the No. 2 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, and the Oklahoma City Thunder hope he’ll be a true superstar in years to come. In his freshman year with the Zags, Holmgren was tallying 14.1 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 3.7 blocks per game while making 60.7% of his field goals.

Although he sat out the previous season, Holmgren had time to watch and learn. Last week, he led the Thunder to a 122-121 victory over Victor Wembanyama’s Spurs, posting 21 points and nine boards in 16 minutes on the court. Holmgren will find his place in OKC’s starting lineup and get a lot of minutes in the coming season, but he won’t be a first scoring option for the Thunder. With his NBA Rookie of the Year odds sitting at +325 at bet365, Holmgren is certainly a tempting option.

⭐ Recommended Bet: Chet Holmgren (+325) at bet365

3. Scoot Henderson (+370) at FanDuel

The Portland Trail Blazers decided to part ways with Damian Lillard, so Scoot Henderson will drive their offense in 2023-24. Henderson’ frame should allow him to immediately get big minutes, though the 6-foot-2 guard will have to work on his jump shot a lot in the coming months. Last season, Henderson was racking up 16.5 points, 6.5 assists, and 5.4 rebounds per game in the G League, but he was making just 42.9% of his field goals and 27.5% of his 3-pointers.

Last Thursday, Henderson was Portland’s leading scorer in a 122-111 defeat to the Phoenix Suns. He had 22 points, four rebounds, and four assists, but Henderson also turned the ball over six times in 31 minutes on the floor. Playing alongside Anfernee Simmons and Deandre Ayton will certainly help, so Henderson’s +370 Rookie of the Year odds look attractive.

⭐ Recommended Bet: Scoot Henderson (+370) at FanDuel

NBA Rookie of the Year Odds: The Best of the Rest

Brandon Miller had a wonderful freshman year at Alabama (18.8 PPG, 8.2 RPG) and was selected as the No. 2 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. The Charlotte Hornets have high expectations, as Miller has the potential to become an elite scorer, but he’ll struggle to defend in his rookie season. Miller runs the floor well and has good lateral movement but needs to add muscle to his frame.

Cam Whitmore and Amen Thompson will try to make the Houston Rockets a respectable team, but I don’t expect much from this duo. They’ll struggle to beat Wembanyama and Holmgren in the race for the Rookie of the Year Award. It’s a similar story with Sasha Vezenkov, who won the EuroLeague MVP this past season. The 6-foot-9 forward is a top-notch scorer but lacks defensive awareness, so Vezenkov will have to crack the Sacramento Kings rotation first.
