2023 Open Championship Picks: Favorite, Contender & Longshot for British Open

  • ✅ RORY McILROY (+700)
  • ✅ BROOKS KOPEPKA (+2000)
  • ✅ TYRRELL HATTON (+2500)

The top golfers in the world will descend to the Royal Liverpool Golf Club in at Hoylake for the 2023 Open Championship this week. It will mark the 13th time that the iconic course has hosted the fourth major of the year.

The last time the Open Championship came to this course on England’s North West coast was in 2014 when RORY McILROY (+700) was victorious, shooting a 17-under-par 271 to beat Rickie Fowler and Sergio Garcia by two strokes.

Astonishingly, that was also McIlroy's last major tournament win though the Northern Irishman has been on the brink of winning a major tournament multiple times since then, including at last year's Open Championship when he finished third, two strokes behind winner Cameron Smith. McIlroy also finished in second at the U.S. Open this year, losing to Wyndham Clark by one stroke.

But he’ll have a host of big names challenging him for the famous Claret Jug with Scottie Scheffler Jon Rahm and BROOKS KOPEPKA (+2000) just some of those who will surely be in with a shout.

Royal Liverpool, the home of Hoylake, has witnessed triumphant moments from golf legends like Rory McIlroy in 2014 and Tiger Woods in 2006. Moreover, illustrious figures like Walter Hagen and Bobby Jones are also past victors at this historical course.

The course, extending to a length of 7,349 yards, will be a par 72 this year. Situated directly on the banks of the River Dee, it offers a quintessential links challenge.

One of England's premier golf venues, Hoylake, has recently undergone a transformation, boasting a brand-new par 3 17th hole. The revamped 136-yard hole is set to inject an additional thrill to the game, along with the extended par 5 concluding hole.

The third hole, notorious for its lengthy internal out-of-bounds area, holds a reputation as one of the most formidable challenges in The Open circuit.

The inception of the original course in 1869 was the handiwork of Robert Chambers and George Morris, the younger sibling of Old Tom Morris. Since then, it has been the stage for 12 Open Championships.

The tournament roster will consist of 156 players, which will be narrowed down after the cut on Friday evening.

Players from LIV Golf, including past champions such as Cameron Smith, Phil Mickelson, Louis Oosthuizen, and Henrik Stenson, will be participating.

Other legendary figures in Open history, like Ernie Els, John Daly, and Darren Clarke, will also join the competition, although Tiger Woods will be absent due to injury. Will Zalatoris, currently the 13th best golfer in the world, will miss the event too.

A vast number of golfers have participated in the Open Qualifying Series this year, with Englishmen Matt Wallace and Alex Fitzpatrick successfully earning their spots. Others who have qualified include Thomas Detry, Branden Grace, Antoine Rozner, Charl Schwartzel, and Laurie Canter.

Notably, prominent players such as Sergio Garcia, Graeme McDowell, and Jamie Donaldson were unable to make the cut this year.

2023 Open Championship Odds, Picks & Predictions

Tyrrell Hatton

After narrowly losing to Wyndham Clark at the recent 2023 U.S. Open, a major victory has eluded the 34-year-old Rory McIlroy since his triumph at the 2014 U.S. PGA Championship.

However, a glimmer of hope emerged as he finished strong, securing a one-stroke victory over Robert MacIntyre at the Scottish Open on Sunday with two consecutive birdies.

Hoylake, a traditional links course, presents a formidable challenge especially when buffeted by strong winds. The strategic value of tee-time selection cannot be underestimated, as it can be a determining factor.

With an impressive count of 81 bunkers, the course rewards not only long drives off the tee but also calculated and tactical gameplay.

RORY McILROY (+700)

Despite a nine-year gap since his last major championship win, Rory McIlroy has been knocking on the door recently, making his presence felt at the top of the leaderboard at some of the big events in recent months while the dramatic win at last week's Genesis Scottish Open will be a huge confidence booster.

Royal Liverpool holds a special significance for McIlroy as it was here that he clinched his 2014 Open Championship victory and most recent major to date. Although he hasn't secured a win at a major tournament since, McIlroy has been consistently creating opportunities for himself, including an impressive performance during the final round of last year's championship where he missed out narrowly to Cameron Smith.

His golfing prowess and resilience hint at a promising potential for success in this year's Open Championship and what a story it would be if he finally ended his major drought here – the scene of his emphatic -17 under par victory back in 2014.

BROOKS KOEPKA (+2000)

After triumphing at the PGA Championship held at Oak Hill back in May, the American golfer has now amassed an impressive collection of five major titles and will be eyeing a potential career grand slam with victory here.

To achieve the illustrious honor, Koepka must now secure the coveted Claret Jug to emulate the likes of Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods, making him one of the more eye-catching contenders going into the fourth major of the year.

During his early years as a professional golfer, Koepka extensively participated in tournaments across Europe and having achieved four top-10 finishes at the Open already, while also displaying exceptional form this year, Koepka is poised to be a prominent contender once more at Hoylake.

TYRELL HATTON (+2500)

Tyrell Hatton is a serious contender for the title with the potential to triumph far greater than his betting odds would suggest, thus making him an attractive prospect for those who like an outsider.

The Englishman has been in pursuit of major championship success for some time now and his strongest performances have been at the Open Championship. His solitary top-five finish at a major tournament was achieved at this very event in 2016, and he's secured placements within the top 11 in two of his last three Open Championship outings.

Moreover, Hatton has twice tasted victory on the European Tour at St Andrews, a links-style course akin to Royal Liverpool, a fact which will surely play to his advantage as he seeks to land the Claret Jug on Sunday.
