DraftKings Bonus Code Unlocks $1,000 for the 2023 Open Championship, Picks & Players to Watch

The 151st edition of the Open Championship, also known as the British Open, marks the fourth and final golf major of 2023, getting underway on Thursday, 20 July.

Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake is the host for the 13th time, with Australia's Cameron Smith returning to defend the title he secured at St Andrews the previous year.

Rory McIlroy (+700), from Northern Ireland, claimed the prestigious Claret Jug at Hoylake, the last time the Open was hosted here in 2014. It remains his sole victory in this championship.

Since his last major triumph at the 2014 U.S. PGA Championship, McIlroy is keen to reclaim his winning form, especially after narrowly losing to Wyndham Clark by one stroke at the 2023 U.S. Open held last month.

In a perfect tune-up, the 31-year-old golfer scored birdies on the final two holes, winning the Scottish Open by one stroke over Robert MacIntyre on Sunday, 16 July.

But he won't have it all his own way with a host of top names looking to claim the Claret Jug, including last year's champion Cameron Smith (+1800) who beat McIlroy to win this tournament 12 months ago at St Andrews.

2023 Open Championship - Players to watch

Scottie Scheffler

Scottie Scheffler +700 at Draftkings Sportsbook

The top-ranked golfer in the world consistently demonstrates an impressive level of performance, making him a contender in any tournament he participates in.

Throughout 16 tournaments this year, the 27-year-old hasn't placed outside the top 12 and has an impressive record of eight top-10 finishes in his most recent ten majors.

His performances in the last two majors resulted in a shared second place at the PGA Championship and a third place at the U.S. Open.

British links courses don't pose significant challenges for Scheffler, who ended up tied for eighth at Royal St Georges in 2021 and 21st at St Andrews the following year.

Having secured his first major title at last year's Masters, Scheffler is aiming to increase his major count. His tied third-place finish at the Scottish Open indicates he's in excellent form for this endeavor.

Cameron Smith +1800 at Draftkings Sportsbook

The current Open champion, maintains his position in the top 10 of the global rankings, even though he has only participated in four official events this season.

Despite not being particularly strong in driving the ball, he managed to secure top-10 placements in two of these tournaments, the U.S. PGA and the U.S. Open. Additionally, he recently achieved his first victory of the year at LIV London just last week.

Twelve months ago, Smith fired a final-round 64 at St Andrews to secure his maiden major title. The Australian golfer, who moved to the LIV Golf tour just days after this major win, has a solid enough putting game to be a strong contender in any tournament.

Driving might not be as critical at Hoylake as in previous majors, enhancing Smith's chance of becoming the first golfer to successfully defend the Open title since Padraig Harrington achieved this feat in 2008.

Rory McIlory

Rory McIlroy  is definitely in the running as he strives to conclude his nine-year major title hiatus at the site of his last, and to date only, Open win back in 2014.

Last year, McIlroy finished an impressive third at St Andrews and was an even more tantalizing runner-up at the U.S. Open last month. He's in stellar form heading into Hoylake.

The 34-year-old has stacked up six consecutive top-10 placements, climaxing with his second victory of the season at the Scottish Open.

As he revisits the venue of his singular Open triumph, McIlroy is considered a strong contender for hoisting the renowned Claret Jug once more.

Jon Rahm +1300 at Drafkings Sportsbook

Following a missed cut at the Travelers Championship, Jon Rahm decided to take a week's break prior to the Open.

Before this, the hard-hitting Basque player had tied for 10th place at the U.S. Open after earning his first Masters title in April.

In his six previous Open appearances, Rahm has managed only one top-10 finish, where he tied for third place at Royal St Georges, trailing behind Collin Morikawa.

Rahm traveled to Ballybunion Golf Club in County Kerry, Ireland, for some links training.

Even though Hoylake might not cater to his particular strengths, Rahm's short game has enhanced over recent years, giving him a plausible chance to present a strong challenge.
