Gambling.com Overall Score: 8.2/10 (No. 5 among U.S. sportsbooks)

Our Verdict: theScore Bet represents Penn Entertainment's third try at making an impression on the U.S. sports betting market. While this version of its sportsbook has all the right features in place to make that happen—broad and deep betting menus, unique and personalized promotions, and live betting tools—it remains to be seen how much bettors will trust this latest venture and adapt to the changes.

Sports & Markets: 10/10

It's no surprise that theScore's betting platform offers a wide range of North American and international sports (though the exact offering varies state by state).

You can play all the standard betting lines, spreads, and totals, along with a better-than-average variety of same-game parlay and player prop options. In addition to the typical futures markets, there are numerous division, season, awards, and team-based specials.

Before a game begins, you can click a link to a game preview in theScore app, theScore Bet's sports news companion product.

I’ll start immediately by saying that the number of betting options is as good or better than any other book I’ve used. I tend to stick to the more popular options, such as football, basketball, baseball, hockey, and soccer, but I have also dabbled in niche markets like darts, beach volleyball, and e-sports competitions. This was often spurred on by one of the app’s many daily bonuses or special offers.

I’ve discovered and then wagered on events I've only learned about through the app—I’ve placed bets on the CFL, UFL, NCAA football, NPB, KBO, PBL, and AHL.

Shannon Lane

The match stats and scores update frequently to accommodate live betting, and I haven’t encountered any lag, loading issues, or hiccups.

Promotions: 9.75/10

This is the sportsbook that probably has the most unique promotions we've seen in the U.S. market. theScore Bet offers dozens of daily sportsbook promos. There's an extensive list of available promos that rotate constantly.

The boosts are entertaining, typically without minimum bet amounts or wagering requirements.  There are also plenty of pre-picked, boosted same-game parlays every week of the season.

Some are built explicitly for the most newsworthy games of the day, but quite a few others have often piqued my interest for competitions I didn’t even know were taking place. In particular, there are more special deals for futures markets than in any other book I’ve seen.

The only criticism from me is that many of the promos are directly tied to a specific parlay or bet, without offering good-value promos that you can use as you please. And the majority of those special bets are for very long odds, which doesn't necessarily match up with everyone's betting preferences.

I’ve redeemed and received Penn Play cash to use in the app (although I haven’t redeemed it for any non-gaming extras).

Payments: 8.0/10

First and foremost, it's easy to fund your account and withdraw money from theScore Bet reliably. However, there are slightly fewer deposit and withdrawal options with theScore than there were with ESPN BET.

theScore Bet's banking options appear to be more extensive than those of any other book I've regularly used. The one knock might be that while some platforms send withdrawals within even an hour or so, theScore transactions can take a bit longer, sometimes not taking place until the following day (even for smaller amounts).

Peter Mooney
Peter Mooney

I've had similar experiences. Despite the numerous banking methods available, I've found withdrawal times to be slower than those of other sportsbooks.

Customer Support: 5.75/10

You can contact theScore Bet for assistance at any time through the live chat feature in the app. You can also email or request a callback from the support team.

Solid customer service methods are a strong point, though the customer support itself can sometimes be inconsistent.

The live chat begins with a bot, and it can be challenging to connect with a live representative when using this service.

Tom Ober
Tom Ober

I haven't been too thrilled with the customer support from theScore. There is a callback option (which does help with convenience) and live chat, but live chat can be challenging and time-consuming actually to reach. Support staff appear to be limited in both their knowledge and the scope of their independent actions to help resolve situations. This is an area where theScore could improve.

Reputation & User Feedback: 9.5/10

theScore Bet operated in several U.S. states before exiting the market in 2022 to focus on Canada. Now, the brand is coming back online, attempting to recapture some of the magic of ESPN BET's early days.

theScore Bet protects your account with encrypted transactions and state-of-the-art software and technology. It also offers optional multi-factor authentication, a thorough verification process, and a team of experienced experts dedicated to keeping your information safe.

In the sports world, the Penn Entertainment brand carries significant weight, so this book began with a built-in audience, accompanied by relatively high expectations. Luckily, the platform lives up to the hype, offering a great variety of sports, excellent value on promotions, and a smooth, fast, and convenient experience for almost all players.

This sentiment is echoed by web and mobile users alike.

Shannon Lane

Users in Canada who have been using theScore Bet more recently than many U.S. users report that the app performs well, generally paying out winnings promptly. But, I'm concerned that three rebrands since 2020 are making bettors wary of investing too much in theScore and its benefits. It remains to be seen what kind of impact that will have on U.S. users' overall trust levels.

Site UX: 8.25/10

At the time of this review, theScore Bet did not carry over the desktop betting site that ESPN BET previously had. Instead, the website has handy links to help you download theScore Bet, theScore, and other helpful products.

That being said, the overall user experience has remained impressive.

Signing up and getting started on this app was very easy for me. More so than some other online books, the layout and menu system are very intuitive. For me, signing up only took a few minutes.

theScore Bet provides the cleanest layout among our recommended sites. Known for its slick, polished production quality, theScore Bet delivers the fast, reliable, and smooth performance you expect. Promotions and offers are typically based on upcoming specials, even personalized to your betting habits and favorite teams.

Mobile Product: 8.75/10

theScore Bet app is sleek and user-friendly, designed with clarity and ease of use at the forefront. It facilitates quick navigation through sports menus, betting markets, and account management tools. Meanwhile, the app's responsiveness ensures fast updates essential for pre-game and live betting.

The high review scores for the app don’t surprise me, as I’ve found theScore Bet to be one of the easiest to navigate and one of the smoothest-running betting apps in USA available. The betting options are solid, the performance is excellent, and the unique personality of theScore comes through in various promotions.

In terms of ease of use, the app runs more seamlessly than BetMGM or Fanatics and is on par with DraftKings or FanDuel.

Shannon Lane
Shannon Lane

theScore Bet app offers a wealth of real-time sports data and a compelling deposit bonus for new customers. In our experience, the app responds quickly, and navigating from screen to screen is very smooth. The app does an excellent job of suggesting betting markets based on your betting history. I also can’t understate the excellence of the user interface design and the accessibility of the welcome bonus.

The main drawback is that we would like to see more evenness in betting markets.

Responsible Gambling: 10/10

Accessible at any time in the app are several responsible gambling tools that players can use to limit losses, the amount they wager, or how much time they spend using the book. These include: daily time limits, deposit limits, spending limits, loss limits, and cool-off periods.

Shannon Lane
Shannon Lane

The Responsible Gambling resources on theScore Bet are substantial, although they are somewhat hidden in the lower navigation on the site and in the app. Once you reach the section, you'll find several helpful, well-organized articles on recognizing and preventing problem gambling behavior. There's also a good explanation of the limit-setting and other player safety features in place in the book. However, there could be more prominent information and contact details for problem gambling organizations; this information is somewhat hidden, written in plain text.

There is a guide to submitting fairness or other complaints, depending on what state you're in, which I was happy to see right out in the open.

Live Betting Features: 4.75/10

theScore Bet offers standard live betting options, including in-game odds. Odds will update frequently, but there aren't many betting markets to choose from once a game begins.

You can live stream select sports with a verified account. There's a "Watch Live" tab within the live betting menu that shows you available games to stream.

Live streaming is one area where theScore Bet appears to have made improvements compared to previous iterations of the ESPN BET app. Live streaming is available directly from the matchup you're betting on.

Tom Ober

Live betting markets are on par with those of most other sportsbooks, but they don't really stand out to me among different operators.

Odds: 7.25/10

The odds at theScore Bet are good, but probably won't blow you away. One of the best parts of theScore Bet's odds, however, is the app's "Move the Line" slider tool. This allows you to easily set your own lines and see how the price changes accordingly, giving you much more flexibility than you get at other sportsbooks.

In my experience, theScore Bet generally stays consistent with most competitors' game lines, although there are times when the competition undercuts them. It may require a bit more odds shopping than you'd expect to find the best prices here.

Tom Ober
Tom Ober

The odds on theScore Bet are solid, but not spectacular. Rarely will odds shoppers find that the book has the best line for a given wager. At the same time, though, the odds are usually right around where you'd expect, without any big discrepancies from other major players in the industry.

Shannon Lane: User Experience & Reliability

Given theScore Bet's relatively new re-entry into the U.S., I focused on what it kept from ESPN BET and what it may or may not have improved. New users should enjoy the same betting experience as before (and then some).

Rewards Program

Even though ESPN BET rebranded as theScore Bet, Penn Entertainment continues to manage the platform and has retained the same loyalty program, PENN Play Member Rewards. This is good news for patrons of the former versions, as all Rewards Points and Tier Points carried over after the transition.

So, what’s the difference between Rewards Points and Tier Points? You earn both by placing bets online and at PENN retail locations. But Rewards Points are what you actually redeem for bonus bets, shopping discounts, travel, event tickets, and more. Tier Credits determine what level of the program you’re in and what extra benefits you have access to.

You can also earn rewards for staying, playing, or dining at any Penn National location, including dozens of casinos and racetracks spread over 20 states. Partnerships with Norwegian Cruise Line, Choice Hotels, and National Rental Car offer bettors and patrons even more great perks and special offers.

In the “My Account” section, you can easily see your bonus balance and any relevant expiration dates.

Here’s a quick look at the different Penn Play tiers and the extras that go with them:

Features We Love

  • Parlay Lounge: This lounge features pre-built parlays for you to browse. It will even show you how many other users have already placed the same parlays.
  • Parlay+: If you’re a fan of SGPs, you’ll probably use Parlay+ quite a bit. Through this nifty feature, bettors can quickly add up to 10 legs from different markets, including some you won’t find almost anywhere else.
  • Quick Bets: Quick bets are supercharged live bets that are only available for a short time, sometimes just a few seconds. If you’re actively watching a game or match, they can be a great way to play a hunch or back an educated prediction with a bit of action.
  • Shareable Bet Slips: Just like you’d share a photo, video, or article with your friends and family, every bet you place will have a “Share” option at the bottom of the slip. This doesn’t just make it easy for you to pass along bets; it also makes it so people can copy your bets with a few taps.
  • Move the Line Slider: This tool enables you to adjust the line on any market, allowing you to create alternative lines with just a few taps.
