Massachusetts Launches New Mobile App For Problem Gambling Recovery

Massachusetts Launches New Mobile App For Problem Gambling Recovery

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health's Office of Problem Gambling Services (OPGS) announced on September 30, 2026, that it is expanding its recovery supports for people affected by gambling harm with a new mobile application, launching this month alongside the existing Massachusetts Problem Gambling Helpline, to mark National Recovery Month.

The app, called Evive, is designed for people who may not yet feel ready for clinical treatment but want a safe, low-pressure way to start making changes, according to the OPGS announcement.

How Evive Works

The OPGS says Evive offers daily check-ins, progress tracking and evidence-based lessons intended to help users reduce harm, regain a sense of control, and move toward longer-term recovery at their own pace.

It also includes peer support features for people who may feel isolated or unsure about taking the next step toward formal treatment.

Evive is free to download on iOS and Android and launches in English.

The Massachusetts Problem Gambling Helpline, which sits alongside, remains available in Spanish and other languages at no cost, 24 hours a day, at 800-327-5050, with online chat available at MAProblemGamblingHelpline.org.

Part Of A Wider Responsible Gaming Push

The new app follows the Massachusetts Gaming Commission's March 2026 launch of PlayWell, which replaced the state's long-running GameSense brand as the responsible gaming and player health program available at every Massachusetts casino and on sports wagering platforms statewide.

PlayWell includes in-person hubs at casino properties, phone and online support, and the state's voluntary self-exclusion program.

Commission chair Jordan Maynard said at the time that more than a decade of work with stakeholders, operators and patrons had gone into building the state's research and responsible gaming programming, with the Commission aiming to have a bigger direct impact on residents who need support.

How PlayWell Replaced GameSense

PlayWell formally launched on March 27, 2026, taking over from the Commission's longer-running GameSense program at every Massachusetts casino and on sports wagering platforms statewide.

It is wholly owned by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, with day-to-day administration handled by the Massachusetts Council on Gaming and Health, and includes PlayMyWay, which the Commission describes as the first-in-the-nation tool letting players set their own daily gambling limits.

Mark Vander Linden, the Commission's director of research and responsible gaming, said PlayWell was built on existing research and evaluation, enabling its advisors to deliver relevant, timely information to patrons both in casinos and online casinos.

By law, the Commission must maintain a responsible gaming program accessible to patrons at each of the state's licensed casinos, a requirement that has applied since Massachusetts first legalized commercial casino gaming.

Helpline Still First Point Of Contact

The Massachusetts Problem Gambling Helpline remains the state's primary 24/7 contact point and predates both GameSense and PlayWell, continuing to operate in Spanish and other languages alongside the new English-language Evive app, with the Commission positioning the app as an additional, lower-barrier entry point into recovery rather than a replacement for existing helpline and treatment services.
