MGCB Renews Licenses Of Detroit's Three Commercial Casinos

The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) voted unanimously on September 8 to renew the operating licenses of Detroit's three commercial casinos - MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino and Hollywood Casino at Greektown - at its regularly scheduled public board meeting.

Before granting the renewals, the board conducted a full review of each casino's financial standing, operational practices and adherence to the responsible gaming requirements set out in the Michigan Gaming Control and Revenue Act.

"Year after year, these renewals show that Detroit's casinos continue to meet the high bar Michigan sets for operating with integrity," said MGCB Executive Director Henry Williams.

"As the industry continues to evolve, our focus remains the same - protecting patrons, supporting responsible gaming, and making sure this remains an industry Michigan can be proud of."

What The Casinos Pay The State

Under current law, the three Detroit casinos remit 19% of adjusted gross receipts in wagering taxes, split between an 8.1% share to the state and 10.9% to the City of Detroit, on top of separate development agreement payments.

A further 8.4% tax applies to retail receipts on regulated sportsbooks, alongside annual regulatory fees, with the combined payments helping fund city and state programs each year.

What Happens Next

Licenses are reviewed and renewed on an annual basis, and the MGCB says the three commercial casinos will next be up for renewal in September 2027.

The board's oversight also extends to responsible gaming tools such as the Disassociated Persons self-exclusion list and a partnership with Gamban that lets Michigan residents claim a free license for the company's gambling-blocking software.

The board's public meeting was attended by each casino's general manager - Hollywood Casino at Greektown's John Drake, MotorCity Casino's John Policicchio and MGM Grand Detroit's Matt Buckley - alongside MGCB Board Chairperson Jim Townsend and board members Mark Evenson, Andrew Palms, Deidre A. Lambert-Bounds and Joni M. Thrower Davis.
