New York Mobile Sports Betting Handle Rebounds Past $2.26bn In September

New York's mobile sportsbooks took in more than $2.26 billion in wagers across the first four full weeks of September 2026, according to the New York State Gaming Commission's own weekly mobile sports wagering reports, pointing to a rebound after two straight months of year-over-year decline in the state's handle.
The commission's weekly filings show handle climbing through the month as the NFL season opened: $483.3 million in the week ending September 6, $594.6 million the following week, $611.1 million for the week ending September 20 and $573.4 million in the week ending September 27.
That marks a sharp turnaround from the softer weekly totals the commission had reported through most of August, when weekly handle ranged from $373 million to $421 million.
Two-Month Slump Had Industry Asking Questions
New York's sportsbook apps handle fell year-over-year in both July and August 2026, a rare occurrence for the country's largest regulated sports betting market and one that prompted questions about whether demand was cooling after a heavy World Cup summer.
The commission's own monthly compiled report shows New York's handle at $1.73 billion in August, continuing a decline from July's $1.88 billion.
September's weekly totals, by contrast, point to the state's largest-ever September for wagering once the commission publishes its full monthly figure.
Why Bigger Month Doesn't Guarantee Bigger Tax Take
New York taxes mobile sports betting revenue, not handle, at 51%, and gross gaming revenue depends on hold, the share of wagers sportsbooks keep after paying out winners.
Early-season NFL betting tends to be dominated by heavily backed favorites, and when those favorites win, hold rates typically soften even as wagering volume rises.
The commission's weekly GGR figures for September show that pattern playing out, with several weeks posting comparatively thin revenue relative to the handle wagered, a reminder that New York's record betting volume will not automatically translate into a record haul for the state's education fund once final monthly numbers are confirmed.
