Royal Ascot 2023: Selections

Royal Ascot 3

14:30 - JABAARA

This promises to be an exciting Albany race, featuring a group of talented and relatively unknown contenders who showcased their potential in their debut performances. One standout among them is JABAARA, who displayed remarkable speed and determination at Newmarket when she found an opening and swiftly surged to victory. The form displayed by the third-place finisher in that race adds further credibility to JABAARA's chances. Persian Dreamer is a strong contender as well, having delivered an impressive debut performance, and her subsequent defeat at York can be overlooked. Matrika ranks third, defying market expectations with a victory at the Curragh. It's worth noting that debutants from her stable often demonstrate significant promise. Carla's Way turned heads at Doncaster and possesses both striking looks and great potential. Porta Fortuna and Navassa Island, having dominated an Irish Group 3, are also significant contenders in this event.

15:05 - LEZOO

Despite some uncertainty regarding his performance at Sandy Lane, Little Big Bear, who is currently favored at short odds, still commands significant respect. However, in the highly competitive Commonwealth Cup, there are a number of viable alternatives available at larger odds. The top choice is LEZOO, who previously achieved Group 1 success over a 6f distance and could potentially excel in sprinting events once again. Following closely is Ocean Quest, showing improvement and displaying strong finishes in recent races, making this test well-suited for her. These two promising fillies also benefit from a 3lb sex allowance. Sakheer, ranked third in preference, continues to be a compelling option, while Noble Style might experience a resurgence with the introduction of headgear for the first time. Additionally, Shaquille holds clear potential if he can handle the pressure of the occasion. Although Little Big Bear is facing tougher competition than before, his impressive performance as a 2-year-old sets a high standard to beat.

15:40 - HMS PRESIDENT

The last time this race was won from a starting position with a single-digit number was back in 2008, achieved by a frontrunner. While Aimeric and Teumessias Fox appear to be intriguing contenders drawn low this time, the preference leans toward a horse positioned a bit wider. HMS PRESIDENT has demonstrated resilience and is currently in the best form of his career, making him a strong candidate for another impressive performance today. Although the potential of his 4-year-old opponents, especially Al Nafir trained by Appleby (second choice), must be acknowledged and respected, as he now has his first opportunity this season to showcase his capabilities. It's important to mention the notable contenders Maksud, Haunted Dream, and Moracana, who also warrant positive consideration in this race.

16:20 – TAHIYRA

With the unexpected withdrawal of Mawj, the victor of the 1,000 Guineas, the path is now clear for TAHIYRA to seize the opportunity. Holding a clear advantage in terms of ratings, this talented contender appears poised to secure Dermot Weld his long-awaited second triumph in the Coronation Stakes, a remarkable 45 years after Sutton Place triumphed in 1978, cementing the trainer's legendary status. Another promising option and the suggested forecast choice is Queen For You, who has shown great potential. Sounds Of Heaven, who has been showing improvement, shares a connection with the aforementioned rival and should not be overlooked. Additionally, the consistent performer Meditate is expected to put on a strong performance once again.

17:00 – CANDLE OF HOPE

CANDLE OF HOPE, representing the King's stable, appears to be significantly undervalued in this race as she makes her handicap debut. The yard has previously achieved a notable placing at a substantial price from their two previous runners in this event. Candle Of Hope demonstrated great potential by winning her first two races in novice company, with the second victory being accomplished with ease at Thirsk even with a penalty. Although she has since competed at listed level without disgracing herself, this handicap debut comes at an attractive mark of 91. Notably, in all three starts this season, she has finished alongside horses rated at least 10lbs higher than her current mark. Jockey Harry Davies, in only his second ride for the yard, is a fantastic addition to the team and his 3lbs claim further enhances Candle Of Hope's chances. With the horse still progressing and showing promise, she is well worth another opportunity to tackle the mile distance.

17:35 - KING OF STEEL

It's difficult to overlook the strong credentials of KING OF STEEL, who impressively secured a clear second place in the Derby just three weeks ago in his inaugural run under Roger Varian's guidance. If he can replicate that exceptional form, he will be a formidable force and a tough contender to beat. Nonetheless, there are glimmers of hope for others in the field, particularly Artistic Star. Despite finishing seventh in the Derby, he displayed a noteworthy burst of speed towards the end, suggesting that he may not have been suited by the track conditions. Another aspect to consider is the potential for a tactical race, in which case Dubai Mile, who finished ninth in the Derby and has the capability to set the pace, could be the one to benefit. Although both Arrest (Derby) and Continuous (Prix du Jockey Club) disappointed in their recent outings, they hail from respected stables and should have the capacity to perform better in this race.

18:10 –  JER BATT

Conquistador appears to have been meticulously prepared for this race and emerges as a notable contender, especially considering that he holds a favorable weight advantage over the horses he has defeated in his two sprint victories under the guidance of George Boughey. He certainly warrants a high placement on the list of contenders, with stablemate Danger Alert also proving to be a horse that cannot be easily dismissed. Harry Brown, Kerdos, and Tatterstall are all expected to show improvement in their performances, while Tawalla seeks to replicate Latin Lover's success by winning this race under a penalty after triumphing at Kempton the previous week. Hispanic (second choice) encountered early interference in his reappearance at York and found himself in an unfavorable position. However, in his only other 5f outing, he delivered a remarkable performance to secure victory at the Curragh. A resurgence is highly likely today, although he may still face strong competition from JER BATT. The sprinter trained by the Barrons will need to maintain his upward trajectory to overcome his new handicap mark, but his impressive win at Musselburgh showcased his potential. Furthermore, his subsequent defeat at Chester did little to tarnish his reputation, given the circumstances of the race.

Your day-by-day guide to Royal Ascot 2023

Royal Ascot 2

There are so many huge races taking place every day during the five days of Royal Ascot meeting, but we've taken a look at what we consider to be the race to watch on each day, as well as our expert pick, too!

Tuesday June 20

Race to watch: In the upcoming King's Stand Stakes, the spotlight is on two formidable contenders: Highfield Princess, the seasoned Yorkshire-bred runner who has consistently improved with time, and Coolangatta, the exceptional filly hailing from Australia. Highfield Princess has displayed remarkable progression as she has matured. With each passing race, her speed and performance have reached new heights, making her a force to be reckoned with in this competition. Coolangatta arrives on the scene as a highly touted filly from Australia. With a reputation for excellence, she has garnered significant attention and anticipation. Her exceptional skills and pedigree mark her as a top contender in this prestigious race.

Tip of the day: Zoulu Chief in the Coventry Stakes (3.05pm). A 150-1 winner of his last start, the result has been dismissed all round. Never came out of his comfort zone winning by five lengths that day and sure to start a big price again.

Wednesday June 21

Race to watch: The highly anticipated event to watch out for is the Prince of Wales's Stakes, where the 2021 Derby champion aims to secure his first Group One victory over a distance of one mile and a quarter, solidifying his reputation as a potential stallion. He will face tough competition from Bay Bridge, who emerged victorious over him in the Champion Stakes. However, with the ground conditions favoring a faster track, the tables could turn this time around.

Pick of the day: Intellogent in the Royal Hunt Cup (5pm) likes fast ground and Ascot. He was runner-up in this race 12 months ago only beaten half a length. This year he comes in 1lb lower in the ratings - which should give him half a length to spare!

Thursday June 22

Race to watch: The Norfolk Stakes is a race that demands your full attention, as it flashes by in the blink of an eye. While it's been a while since we witnessed American two-year-olds displaying their blistering speed on this track, Wesley Ward's American Rascal appears to be a standout contender. In his sole start at Keeneland, he triumphed convincingly over four and a half furlongs, leaving his rivals trailing behind by a remarkable margin of 10 and a half lengths. It's worth noting that American Rascal is the offspring of Lady Aurelia, a formidable mare who claimed victory in both the Queen Mary and King's Stand Stakes under Ward's guidance.

Pick of the day: Two years ago Subjectivist was as good a Gold Cup winner as there had been for a long time. An injury looked like putting paid to his career but he’s been brought back. He’s been a bit rusty but two runs should have put him right and in an open Gold Cup (4.20pm) he looks a steal at 8-1.

Friday June 23

Race to watch: The King Edward VII Stakes, often regarded as the Derby consolation race, presents an opportunity for the King and Queen to secure a victory at the esteemed Royal meeting this week. Circle of Fire emerges as their most promising contender in this event. Despite a subpar performance on the all-weather surface in the previous race, Circle of Fire is expected to thrive on turf, making a significant improvement in his performance.

Pick of the day: Shaquille in the Commonwealth Cup (4.20). Little Big Bear will be a short priced favorite but he came up the golden highway when impressive at Haydock and it might be worth opposing such a short-priced runner.

Saturday June 24

Race to watch: The Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes marks a significant moment in the career of Richard Gibson, a prominent trainer originally hailing from Northumberland. Gibson has been regarded as one of the finest exports from our shores, having achieved great success in both France and Hong Kong. As he approaches his final season in the Far East, all eyes are on Wellington, one of the sprinting stars in Hong Kong, to see if he can provide Gibson with a victorious send-off at Royal Ascot. It will undoubtedly be an intriguing spectacle as we witness if Wellington can secure a memorable win and bid farewell to Gibson's tenure in Hong Kong with a resounding triumph.

Pick of the day: Chipstead in the Wokingham Handicap. An improving sprinter whose brother was Oxted who won the July Cup and King’s Stand Stakes, an impressive winner at York last time.
