Casino developer Steve Wynn’s home in Southern Nevada has sold for $17.5 million.

The 15,000-square-foot estate was bought by British businessman Simon Dolan, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Dolan’s purchase is the most anyone has paid for a home in the area this year, a broker told the newspaper.

Built in 2001, the Wynn residence sits on 1.41 acres in Country Club Hills Summerlin, about 20 minutes west of the Las Vegas Strip.

Last year the luxury home was listed for $24.5 million. It has six bedrooms, 11 bathrooms and a climate-controlled wine cellar.

Dolan, who has written a book on business success, has been the subject of news stories for challenging the government in the United Kingdom on its coronavirus lockdown policies.

Wynn Built Las Vegas Resorts

Decades ago, when he operated the Golden Nugget in downtown Las Vegas, Wynn appeared in television commercials with entertainer Frank Sinatra. In the commercials, Sinatra jokingly tells Wynn to make sure his guest room has enough towels.

Wynn later was credited with sparking a boom in megaresort construction on the Strip south of downtown with the opening in 1989 of the Mirage hotel-casino. It was the first new resort on the Strip in 15 years.

The Mirage features a 54-foot-high outdoor volcano that spews flames. The volcano has become a popular fixture on the resort corridor, with nightly shows from 8-11 p.m.

Late last year, the Seminole Tribe of Florida announced plans to buy the Mirage from MGM Resorts International for $1.075 billion. The purchase is awaiting regulatory approval.

The tribe’s gaming operation, Hard Rock International, intends to build a guitar-shaped hotel at the site and, according to reports, wants to demolish the volcano.

News that the volcano might be destroyed has prompted the posting of a change.org online petition to save the tourist attraction. By late this week, the petition had 6,545 signatures of a stated goal of 7,500.

Older Casinos Demolished

In addition to the Mirage, Wynn developed the Bellagio, site of the former Dunes hotel-casino, and Wynn Las Vegas, where the Desert Inn once stood.

The Dunes and Desert Inn are among other longtime Strip resorts that once had Mob connections but have since been demolished. Others that no longer exist include the Stardust, Sands and Riviera.

Wynn has had homes at Lake Tahoe in Northern Nevada and elsewhere, but his last reported residence was in Palm Beach, Florida.

In 2018, he resigned as chairman and CEO of Wynn Resorts after the Wall Street Journal reported on allegations of sexual misconduct. Wynn denied the allegations, calling them “preposterous.”
