Indiana October Sports Betting Handle Rises to Record $230.9M

Boosted by football action, including the return of the Big Ten, Indiana’s sportsbooks continued to set monthly records for handle and revenue in October.

October’s sports betting handle in Indiana was $230.9 million, up 11.3% from September’s $207.45 million. Revenue followed suit with adjusted gross revenue for sports wagering hitting an all-time high of $21.1 million, up 47.7% from September’s $14.28 million.

The majority of sports betting in Indiana was done online and two operators, DraftKings and FanDuel, were the runaway leaders in Internet wagering.

The Indiana mobile sports betting total in October was $193 million, up 7.9% from September ($179 million) and up 302% from October 2019 ($48 million) — mobile was 83.6% of the total market in October 2020, according to Indiana’s October report.

Of the mobile handle, DraftKings (in partnership with Ameristar Casino in East Chicago) accounted for $90.5 million and FanDuel (with Blue Chip Casino in Michigan City) accounted for $63.6 million. Combined, those two online operators accounted for 80% of the total Internet sports gambling handle. BetMGM posted $20.1 million (with Belterra Casino in Florence).

Other Key Numbers in Indiana

The total gaming win at Indiana casinos — table games plus slots/electronic games — was $166.6 million, down 2.0% from September ($170 million); taxable AGR for gaming was $149.4 million, down 1.9% from September ($152.4 million).

Among various sports, not surprisingly football was king, accounting for $84.72 million in handle in October followed by baseball with $26.59 million and basketball with $10.8 million. Parlays accounted for $61.12 million of the action and “other” sports accounted for $45.96 million.

Football betting in Indiana has been helped by the strong start by the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts and the Big Ten’s Indiana Hoosiers. The Colts are 5-3 and in second place in the AFC South. They face the 6-2 Titans Thursday. The Hoosiers are 3-0 and have risen to No. 10 in the country in the Associated Press poll. They face Michigan State on Saturday.

Iowa Also Saw Record

Another Midwest state, Iowa, released its October sports betting numbers on Monday, and it also had a record-setting month, with its highest total sports betting handle, mobile handle and revenue for a single month.

Iowa had $81,902,416 in total sports betting handle, up 13.1% from September’s $72,397,241. The mobile handle was $56,886,207 while revenue was $9,098,995.

Indiana celebrated its one-year anniversary with a live sports betting market on Sept. 1. Its total handle eclipsed $1 billion in July.
