We’re taking a chance on this game in a pitching matchup featuring Kutter Crawford and Jordan Montgomery with two top-eight offenses in terms of runs per game.
Starting things off with Montgomery, he’s 9-11 on the year but has a solid 3.47 ERA through 168 ⅔ innings of work. He tends to struggle against leadoff hitters, allowing a batting average of .326 across 86 at-bats, but after that, the average drops to .253 for the No. 2 and .218 for the No. 3 hitters. The top three hitters for the Red Sox include Alex Verdugo, Rafael Devers, and Justin Turner. Verdugo and Devers are lefties, and Montgomery allows a .264 batting average to lefties and an on-base percentage of just .281.
Heading to the Rangers batting order against Crawford, yes, he hasn’t been as potent as Montgomery. He’s 6-7 on the year with a 4.26 ERA across 28 appearances (20 starts). The top of the order tends to get to him a bit compared to the rest, allowing batting averages of .254, .304, and .265, respectively. He’s allowing 11 home runs to hitters in the top three of the order. The Rangers are an excellent offense, but they tend to keep it cooled down in the first inning, scoring 0.54 runs per first inning per game, which is 12th in baseball. Over their last three games, they haven’t been able to muster up a run, either.
