Ohio bars and restaurants that want a sports betting kiosk in their establishments were allowed to begin submitting applications to state gaming regulators on Friday.

These so-called Type-C liquor permit holders have until Aug. 15 to submit applications if they want kiosks up and running in their businesses by Jan. 1, 2023, the date legal Ohio betting apps are allowed to launch.

Jessica Franks, the Ohio Casino Control Commission’s director of communications, told Gambling.com that liquor permit holders who submit their applications by Aug. 15 will be guaranteed consideration to launch on the Jan. 1 universal start date.

“We will continue to accept applications after this date; however, those applicants will not be guaranteed to start on Jan. 1,” she said.

Governor Signs Sports Betting Bill

Republican Gov. Mike DeWine signed a legislative bill into law late last year that legalizes sports betting at land-based sites across the state and on mobile apps.

The Ohio Casino Control Commission set Jan. 1, 2023, as the date when all licensed sports betting operators can begin accepting wagers simultaneously. Until then, sports betting cannot take place legally in Ohio.

After Jan. 1, as many as 50 mobile betting apps could eventually be in operation in Ohio, though gaming regulators have said they doubt that many will be licensed. With that said many brands are ready to go live on the launch date.

According to a Casino Control Commission report, land-based sportsbooks are available at four casinos, seven racinos, and 10 professional sports venues. Sports betting will also be available on bar and restaurant kiosks with liquor permits.

Brands that are to launch on Jan. 1 will offer some of the best Ohio sportsbook promotions.

License Applications So Far

As of midday Friday, the following online operators and land-based sites submitted applications seeking a sports betting license.

These applications have been submitted in time for the operators to be considered for the Jan. 1 universal start date.

Applications submitted after July 15 will still be considered. However, if approved, these later applicants won’t be in the group that can begin accepting bets on Jan. 1, gaming officials said.
