Virginia Historical Horse Racing Revenue Slumps In August
Historical horse racing (HHR) machines in Virginia generated $47.9 million in revenue in August, a 10% decline on a same-store basis compared with August 2025, according to figures reported by CDC Gaming.
Including the newly opened Roseshire in Henrico County and The Rose Casino in Dumfries, the overall downturn was a smaller 5.7%. All HHR venues in Virginia are owned by Churchill Downs.
August lacked a Labor Day weekend and had one fewer weekend day than the same month in 2025, but the bigger factor was the eighth month of competition from Live Virginia in Petersburg, which weighed heavily on nearby Churchill Downs properties.
The impact was greatest in Richmond, where revenue plunged 30.2% to $10.1 million for Rosie's-branded slot parlors, with machines averaging $270 apiece per day. Colonial Downs fell 26.1% to $3.8 million, a $327 per-machine average, while Rosie's in Emporia dropped 22.7% to $1.8 million, averaging $380 per slot.
Roseshire And The Rose Buck The Trend
Not every venue struggled. Roseshire posted the highest HHR average in the state at $503 per device, for a total of $2.7 million.
The Rose Casino in Dumfries saw a per-device average of $308 and year-over-year takings up 11.5%, grossing $15.3 million, the highest of any slot parlor in Virginia.
Rosie's in Hampton took in $8.7 million, down 6.2%, while Rosie's in Vinton rose 2.8% to $5.2 million and Rosie's in Collinsville grew 2.9% to $400,000.
