Online Gambling in West Virginia

West Virginia Daily Fantasy

Daily fantasy is completely legal in West Virginia, following a ruling by the state's Attorney General in 2016. The ruling determined DFS games came down to skill, not chance. As a result, residents of the state can participate in daily fantasy games offered by companies like DraftKings and FanDuel as and when they choose. This is a good example of West Virginia's progressive approach to gaming and gambling, as many states have either chosen to leave daily fantasy in a legal gray area (much like online gaming), or simply made it illegal.

The Mountain State pushed things even further in 2018 when it legalized sports betting.

Things aren't quite as expansive when it comes to the online gaming world - yet.

There are no regulated online sports betting, poker or casino games in the state. Sports betting is expected to come online sometime early in 2019. Given the fact that neighboring Pennsylvania passed an expansive online casino gambling legislation bill in 2017, West Virginia could well follow suit in the coming years with poker and casino offerings int he coming years.

Sports Betting in West Virginia

West Virginia passed a sports betting legalization bill even before the Supreme Court struck down the federal ban and became the fifth state to take a legal bet. The state's five casinos, starting with the Hollywood Casino in Charles Town, have one-by-one finalized their approval process and all five expect to take bets before the end of 2018.

The approval for online betting will take a little longer, but multiple leading online betting companies and stakeholders have already worked to get West Virginia mobile betting up and running. The Mountain State should have one of the nation's most robust online sports betting environments, possibly operating before the end of 2018.
