West Virginia sports betting was technically approved even before the Supreme Court struck down the federal ban in 2018. It should come as no surprise for West Virginia gambling enthusiasts that the Mountain State was one of the first to legalize sports gambling.

The first legal sports wager was placed in September 2018, and since then there are now five in-person gaming centers spread across the state. Any eligible player can place a bet at four of the state’s casinos, as well as the private Greenbrier Resort if they are a guest.

West Virginia online sports betting hasn’t been as smooth, but is now legal and operational. FanDuel began taking online sports bets in West Virginia in August 2019. Previously, the state’s only online sports betting site opened and closed within a few weeks due to a dispute between the operator and its partners. Gamblers are hopeful the site will come back online soon, and several additional sports betting operators expect to enter the market, so track for updates.

West Virginia horse racing and greyhound racing goes back decades, but it was only within the past decade that the state embraced casino games. Now five facilities offer in-person gaming, including slots and table games.

Four of the five sites are open to the public, while a fifth in The Greenbrier hosts a private casino for the resort’s guests. Two public casinos are located in the northern panhandle, one in the western panhandle and another in the central portion of the state.

In coming years, West Virginia casino gambling will be accessible by anyone inside state lines. The five casinos are expected to partner with online operators to give players more chances than ever to experience the thrill of a casino from anywhere in the state while playing for real money with safe, regulated sites.

Rolling out a regulated online casino network will take months, but eligible bettors in the state will soon be able to enjoy these games with a mobile device anywhere in West Virginia.

Online Poker in West Virginia

Like online casino gaming, online poker is coming to West Virginia. Though there’s no timeline for online poker in West Virginia, the state is getting closer to its launch of some of the earliest regulated, legal, real-money poker sites in America.

Once online poker opens, West Virginia will join neighboring Pennsylvania, as well as Delaware, Nevada and New Jersey among a group of states offering the games. Delaware, Nevada and New Jersey already have a player pooling compact, allowing players in each state to go up against players in the other two. Pennsylvania may also join the compact, which would provide the largest player base yet.

Once West Virginia online poker begins, it too may join the compact.

Gambling in West Virginia

West Virginia gambling has steadily grown in the past few years and is now positioned to be one of the more expansive markets in the nation.

West Virginia was one of the earlier states to formally support and regulate its pari-mutuel horse racing industry, creating an oversight commission in the 1930s. As horse racing began to wane in influence and revenues in the ensuing decades, West Virginia propped up its gaming industry with a state lottery and, later, full-fledged casino-style options at its tracks.

After the growth of “racinos” across the state, West Virginia elected officials turned to internet options to further strengthen state gaming. In the coming years West Virginia online gaming will become a pioneering force and help pave the way for other states to follow.

Enthusiasts look forward to the launch of online poker and casino games in the state. Lawmakers approved internet poker and casino games in 2019, and authorities hope to have both options available as soon as 2020. West Virginia will likely be the fifth state to have online poker and just the fourth to have online casino games.

West Virginia online gambling is one of the most exciting markets in the nation, so continue to monitor our site for all the latest developments.
