BetMGM Expands Footprint In Puerto Rico With Retail Sportsbook In Western Region
In a major development for the Caribbean gaming industry, BetMGM has joined forces with Casino del Mar at La Concha Resort to announce a new retail sportsbook at the Mayaguez Resort and Casino in western Puerto Rico.
BetMGM entered into the partnership in San Juan three years ago and the new sportsbook at the Mayaguez Resort and Casino marks their first extension to the west and the next level for establishing regulated betting in Puerto Rico.
According to a 2021 market-access agreement between Casino del Mar/La Concha and BetMGM, the operator committed to bringing both retail and mobile sports betting to the US territory.
It is the first of its kind outside the continental United States. Since then, the two companies developed a "blueprint" in San Juan, which now serves as the foundational model for this latest expansion.
The new facility is being constructed in Mayaguez under the supervision of the Puerto Rico Gaming Commission, which upholds regulations that highlight transparency, compliance and player protection.
The venture is backed by Rolando Padua, president of Paulson Puerto Rico, and he says the move shows the company's,"commitment to providing high-quality, responsible entertainment throughout the island."
Regulatory Context And Market Growth
The significance of the expansion goes beyond mere geography.
Puerto Rico’s sports betting market, legalized following legislation in 2019, is still in a nascent stage, yet already attracting major international players.
According to industry experts, the first retail sportsbook on the island was introduced in early 2022.
