Nevada Problem Gambling Center Expands Reno Office With In-Person Treatment

The Dr. Robert Hunter International Problem Gambling Center has expanded its Reno office to offer in-person treatment for the first time, hiring an in-house clinician based in the city to run its intensive outpatient program locally.

The Las Vegas-based provider's program involves four three-hour sessions per week for six weeks, giving northern Nevada residents access to a level of in-person care that previously required travel outside the region.

New Level Of Service

The expansion marks the first time the center has been able to provide this level of in-person service in Reno. 2News Nevada, a Reno-area outlet, confirmed that the center hired the new clinician specifically to make in-person sessions possible at the office, which had previously offered only remote support to clients in the area.

The move adds treatment access in northern Nevada at a time when responsible gambling concerns are growing nationally around mobile sports betting, prediction markets, and gambling risk among young adults.

The expansion itself does not change any Nevada gambling regulations, but providers say it reflects a continued rise in demand for treatment access as new betting formats reach more residents through smartphones rather than casino floors.

Clinicians who work in the field have repeatedly pointed to the always-available nature of mobile wagering, compared with a trip to a casino floor, as a factor that can make problem gambling harder for friends and family to spot before it becomes serious.

A Broader Treatment Network

The Dr. Robert Hunter International Problem Gambling Center, named for the physician who helped establish Nevada's modern problem-gambling treatment framework, already operates services in Las Vegas and has steadily expanded satellite access across the state.

Nevada funds a share of its problem-gambling treatment and prevention programs through a long-standing quarterly assessment on restricted slot machines under state law (NRS 458A), which flows into the state's Account to Support Programs for the Prevention and Treatment of Problem Gambling and is administered by the Department of Health and Human Services.

That funding has historically lagged behind treatment demand, according to the department's own legislative briefing documents, which noted funding fell from roughly $1.7 million in 2008 to about $1.3 million by the 2017-2018 state fiscal year, even as the problem-gambling service system continued to develop.

A Wider Network

Expanding in-person capacity in Reno gives the network a second physical hub outside the Las Vegas valley, reducing the distance northern Nevada residents need to travel for structured, in-person intensive outpatient care rather than relying solely on telehealth sessions.

With Nevada's betting market continuing to expand into mobile sportsbooks and prediction-market-style products, treatment providers across the state have pointed to northern Nevada specifically as an area where in-person access has lagged behind the south.
