Responsible gambling is a phrase used to refer to the idea of wagering within your budget and doing so for strictly entertainment purposes and nothing else. It’s something New York sports betting operators have taken seriously and the move to online sports betting in the Empire State has brought with it new measures and efforts to keep gambling safe and enjoyable.

Responsible gambling measures involve anyone who bets on sports, plays casino games, and wagers on anything within the legal realms of gambling. You should never risk money you cannot afford to lose and the responsible gambling methods by each state are in place so you can keep things fun and enjoyable.

Anything that goes beyond entertainment and involves gambling for financial purposes will come under the category "problem gambling", and those who find themselves wagering more than they should or doing things like borrowing money to gamble should seek information from the state.

Responsible gambling also goes for the operators too. Gambling operators are made to use responsible gambling methods so that they are ensuring their users stay safe. This involves things like setting deposit limits with the operator, and having a cool-off period where you cannot bet within a certain time.

How Can You Exclude Yourself From Gambling in NY?

One of the main ways in which you can completely exclude yourself from gambling in the state is by voluntary self-exclusion. This completely permits you from being able to gamble during a certain exclusion period which you can choose yourself.

To do this, you will need to complete a self-exclusion form and have it notarized. You can submit the form by mailing it to the New York State Gambling Commission, or mail it to one of the state-licensed gambling facilities, or submit it in person at a licensed gambling facility.

Anybody on the self-exclusion list can have their name removed from it after the initial period of self-exclusion has expired. Once you’re on the list, however, you cannot come off it within that set period.

The New York Resources for Responsible Gambling

There are a number of resources in New York for those after information about responsible gambling. You can contact the New York Council on Problem Gambling, the New York State HOPEline, the New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports, and also contact the New York State Gaming Commission directly.

Also with the operators, you can set deposit limits and be able to limit how much you can gamble each day and week without having to completely exclude yourself from all activity within New York. If you are finding yourself losing the entertainment value and gambling too much but you want to keep playing to a certain extent, head to the deposit limits on your chosen operator, or contact them directly to get this set up.

There are many ways in which New Yorkers can protect themselves in gambling and the Empire State is paving the way for how a populated state can keep betting safe and enjoyable.
