Reno's Gaming Market Surges As Grand Sierra Resort's Arena Takes Shape

Reno's gaming market is enjoying one of its strongest stretches on record as construction continues on the Grand Sierra Resort's (GSR) 10,000-seat arena, part of a broader $1 billion expansion plan billionaire owner Alex Meruelo is betting will transform Nevada's second-largest gaming market, iGaming Business reported on October 6, 2026.
Market On An Extended Hot Streak
Reno finished its most recent fiscal year in July with $825 million in gross gaming revenue, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board, continuing a run that has outpaced growth in Las Vegas on a percentage basis for much of 2026.
In May, Reno's gaming revenue hit $70.5 million, an 11% year-over-year increase, putting the market's fiscal-year pace 6% ahead of the prior year, the best of Nevada's major gaming markets at the time.

The Arena Project
Approximately three years after it was first announced, foundation and infrastructure work on GSR's arena is continuing as winter approaches, which could slow the pace of construction depending on the severity.
Original cost estimates for the arena alone were around $350 million to $375 million, but that range is now "probably more like $450 to $500 million", per reporting on GSR's own cost disclosures, as Meruelo is "sparing no expense" on the venue.
The arena will host University of Nevada men's basketball games from 2028 as well as other sports and entertainment events, and sits within a broader multi-phase expansion plan that would represent the largest private investment in Reno's history if fully built out.
Why The Timing Matters
Three years ago, skepticism about the arena project was high.
The current surge in Reno's gaming and tourism performance now looks well-timed for Meruelo's bet, giving Grand Sierra Resort a tailwind as it pours money into entertainment infrastructure beyond the casino floor.
For Nevada's casino and sportsbook market, a thriving secondary hub in Reno adds depth to a state long defined by the Las Vegas Strip.
