The Oakland Athletics have signed a binding purchase agreement for prime land near the Las Vegas Strip to build a Major League Baseball stadium, with the first pitch possibly occurring in 2027, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Stadium To Be Built Near the Las Vegas Strip

The 49-acre site is just west of Interstate 15 and T-Mobile Arena, near Las Vegas Strip megaresorts such as Park MGM, New York-New York, and the Excalibur. Construction could begin by next year.

The newspaper reported that the A’s could build a $1.5 billion, 30,000-seat stadium with a partially retractable roof at this site. Red Rock Resorts own the site.

This development apparently ends the American League team’s effort to seek a new waterfront stadium in Oakland to replace the deteriorating Oakland Coliseum.

The Oakland Raiders previously ceased playing at the Coliseum and now make their home in the Las Vegas Valley at Allegiant Stadium. The stadium is just south of the site the A’s are targeting near the Strip.

Other possible baseball stadium sites in Las Vegas, including where the Mob-era Tropicana hotel-casino now stands, presumably are no longer under consideration.

The A's previously played a few regular season games in Las Vegas. In the 1990s, the team opened one season at Cashman Field north of downtown Las Vegas while renovations were underway at the Oakland Coliseum.

Currently, the A’s Triple-A farm team, the Las Vegas Aviators, play west of downtown in a minor league stadium considered too small for a big league team.

NBA Team Targeted For Las Vegas

If the A's relocate to Las Vegas as expected, the team would be the third major professional sports organization to call Southern Nevada home.

Along with the Raiders, the NHL's Vegas Golden Knights are based in the Las Vegas Valley. The Golden Knights, currently competing in the Stanley Cup playoffs, make their home at T-Mobile Arena.

In addition, an effort is underway to attract an NBA team to Las Vegas. At the Global Gaming Expo on the Strip last fall, Las Vegas casino developer Derek Stevens predicted an NBA team will make its home someday in the city.

This would not be the first time regular-season NBA games have taken place in Southern Nevada. Decades ago, the Utah Jazz played some regular season home games on the UNLV campus at the Thomas & Mack Center.
