Shohei Ohtani Next Team Odds

The Major League Baseball trade deadline in 2023 is at 6 p.m. ET on August 1, and one of the most notable players that have been rumored to be potentially on the move is Los Angeles Angels do-it-all-man Shohei Ohtani.

Ohtani, who’s a starter and designated hitter for the team, is first in the AL MVP voting by a wide margin regardless of what futures odds betting site you choose, with a batting average north of .300, 36 home runs, 77 RBIs, and 148 strikeouts with a 3.71 ERA.

Ohtani is arguably one of the best baseball players we’ve ever seen, and he’s on a team that hasn’t had a winning season since 2015.

Of course, the complicated aspect of Ohtani is determining what appropriate compensation for him would be — he should command the largest trade, prospects-wise, ever.

With that, it’s more likely he will enter free agency and remains with the Angels, but below, we’ll investigate some teams that could make a swing to acquire him.

What Teams Are Favored to Acquire Shohei Ohtani?

We covered what could complicate things for an Ohtani trade that would result in him staying with the Angels. We’ll look at teams that could realistically make a trade.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have a reputation as “that team” to make the mega splash in search of a championship.

Their roster has always had or currently has stars, which are headlined now by Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts. In the past, they’ve acquired Trea Turner, Zack Greinke, David Price, Manny Machado, and more.

The Dodgers are first in the NL West at 57-41 and have eight prospects in the Top 100 per MLB Pipeline, hence the reason they're one of the MLB betting favorites to land Ohtani.

The players include the following:

  • Catcher Diego Cartaya
  • Infielder Michael Busch
  • Catcher Dalton Rushing
  • Pitcher Gavin Stone
  • Outfielder Andy Pages
  • Pitcher Emmet Sheehan
  • Pitcher Ryan Pepiot
  • Pitcher Nick Frasso

The Angels could demand all eight of them, and honestly, if I’m the Dodgers, I say yes. Ohtani is a player unlike any we’ve ever seen.

Next up, the Baltimore Orioles are a fascinating case study because they’ve emerged as first place in the AL East and possess three Top 30 prospects, including the No. 1 overall prospect, 19-year-old shortstop Jackson Holliday.

Remember, though, these are just prospects. Acquiring a player like Ohtani is worth whatever resources you can because he’s both pitching and hitting valuable. He could also be a piece to propel the Orioles forward in contention for a championship.

Will the Los Angeles Angels Decide to Spend Big and Keep Him?

We continue to say it, but a player like Ohtani is invaluable. He and Mike Trout are not the reason for the Angels' shortcomings. The team needs to assemble talent around them and can’t do it alone.

If they cannot find a trade partner willing to trade the farm (no pun intended), they should figure out a way to pay him.

According to Spotrac, an Ohtani deal would be worth the following:

  • Pitcher: 6 years, $202 million
  • Hitter: 9 years, $326 million

So, as a pitcher, that’s $33.66 million, and $36.22 million as a hitter.

Let’s say they lock him in for seven years.

You’re looking at a 7-year, $488.6 million deal.

Roughly half a billion dollars.

The Angels cannot let him walk for nothing, so they need to trade him for several assets, break out the wallet, and pay him.
