With summer tourism season underway, Puerto Rico’s sports betting options are continuing to take shape.

One casino sportsbook is open on the island, but mobile wagering is not yet legal.

Located in the Caribbean Sea, Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, with a population of more than 3.2 million. The capital city, San Juan, is about 1,000 miles south of Miami, Florida.

First Sportsbook Open In San Juan

The island’s first and only on-site sportsbook is in operation inside the Casino del Mar at La Concha Resort in San Juan.

The sportsbook at the La Concha casino uses BetMGM odds and offers an array of wagers, including moneyline and prop bets, a casino employee said over the phone. Use of the sportsbook requires on-site registration, though bettors do not have to be hotel guests at the resort.

Casino del Mar at La Concha is among the largest resorts on the island. It offers blackjack, craps, three-card poker and slot machines, according to its website.

No Timeline For Mobile Launch

Mobile sports betting has not gone live in Puerto Rico, but Nevada-based BetMGM has partnered with La Concha to bring mobile wagering to the island, pending regulatory approval.

BetMGM chief executive officer Adam Greenblatt said the partnership is a "major milestone for BetMGM, as we share plans to bring our sports betting platform outside of the U.S. mainland for the first time.”

A timeframe has not been set for when mobile wagering will be legalized in Puerto Rico.

Once it is operational, users will have to sign up in person at a casino or other designated location to activate their mobile app, similar to the procedure in Nevada requiring bettors to register mobile apps at a designated brick-and-mortar site.

DraftKings Seeks Approval

Boston-based DraftKings also is seeking approval to operate mobile and on-site sports betting in Puerto Rico.

DraftKings has partnered with the  Mashantucket Pequot Tribe to open a sportsbook at the Foxwoods El San Juan Casino, according The Day newspaper in New London, Connecticut.

The casino is at the Fairmont El San Juan Hotel in Carolina, just east of San Juan.

In addition to table games such as craps and blackjack, the 15,000-square-foot casino features almost 300 slot machines.
