West Virginia continued to experience a dip in sports betting handle, a trend that began in December.

It appears the reason for the decrease is fewer NFL betting and college football betting opportunities.

WV Sports Betting Handle Down 21%

West Virginia had a total sports betting handle of $58,894,228 in January, which was a 21% decrease from December’s $74,517,005.

However, the results are much better when comparing January 2022 to January 2021. In January 2021, the total sports betting handle was $50,700,483, a 16.2% difference.

As far as West Virginia mobile sports betting, the handle was still down compared to December, going from $59,760,024 to $48,141,086. However, the year-over-year numbers saw a massive increase, up 46.2% from $32,923,330 in January 2021.

Revenue and Taxes See 33% Drop

West Virginia’s revenue in January was $4,098,139, down 33.7% from $6,17,250 in December.

With less revenue, that also means less state share of taxes, with the state bringing in $348,342 instead of $525,066.

Looking at the year-over-year numbers once again, though, West Virginia did see a 3.1% increase in revenue and taxes.

West Virginia iGaming Was Down As Well

iGaming encompasses both sports betting and casino games. Despite December seeing dips in the sports betting department compared to November 2021, West Virginia did have a massive month when looking at iGaming as a whole.

From December to January, the total iGaming handle dropped to $192,135,878 from $280,448,898. The $192,135,878 was also less than November, seeing a total handle of $198.16 million.

Now, the state will look ahead to the February 2022 figures and hope that Super Bowl betting draws in more bettors, both sharp and casual.
