EFL Championship Betting Tips

How to Bet on the EFL Championship

There are a number of ways to approach Championship betting. Naturally, you can bet on futures markets such as To Win Outright, To Be Promoted or To Be Relegated.

The majority of Championship bets are placed on the hundreds of matches that take place throughout the campaign. You can choose to bet on an individual match such as Derby vs. Leeds, or alternatively compile a parlay bet for a particular round of matches.

Many sportsbooks now offer In-Play or In-Game betting markets for every Championship match, which gives customers the chance to take advantage of the live odds that appear when a particular game kicks off. The prices are constantly changing and there is often the opportunity to Cash Out your bet.

How to Back an EFL Championship Winner

As mentioned, the EFL Championship is a highly-competitive soccer league and probably more so than the Premier League, where only a handful of teams can triumph come the end of the season. The English second flight differs in the sense that around 50% of clubs will have their sights set on claiming automatic promotion.

Bettors should look to compile a shortlist of teams that they feel can compete for the Championship title. It’s worth looking at which clubs did well the previous season and many betting customers monitor each outfit’s transfer activity to understand which sides are recruiting players in a bid to fire a promotion drive.

Some customers will wait until the first few matches of the season are played so that they can analyze the early campaign form and understand the various data rather than rely on the numbers from the previous season. It’s certainly worth looking outside the obvious favorites when it comes to this market, as the winner often comes in at a big price -- such as Norwich in 2019.

How to Bet In-Game on the EFL Championship

Whether a Championship match is being televised or not, the chances are that many sportsbooks will be providing In-Play or In-Game betting markets on the game. This means that you can bet on markets such as Goals Markets while a match is taking place, and it’s an exciting way to be involved in a soccer match.

For example, a match between Fulham and Cardiff might be taking place and the betting odds will change according to what’s happening on the field. If Fulham take an early lead, then a sportsbook will make the Cottagers strong favorites to win, although some bettors might fancy Cardiff to come back and bet on them at a huge price.

Many customers like to bet on markets involving goals, corners or cards, with bettors getting the chance to bet over or under a certain amount. It can add to the excitement of watching a match, and there is usually a Cash Out option, which means being able to potentially take a profit if you get into a strong position with your bet.

Betting on EFL Championship Top Scorer

Many customers enjoying trying to find the Top Scorer in the division instead. This means backing the player who will score the most goals during the regular season, with Teemu Pukki of Norwich City plundering 29 during the 2018-19 season.

It doesn’t mean that the Championship Top Scorer always plays for the title-winning team, and it’s worth looking at which players have a decent track record of scoring goals at this level. It naturally follows that players for teams likely to challenge at the top stand more chance of scoring a decent haul for the campaign than those playing for lesser clubs.

Many betting customers will place each-way bets on Championship Top Scorer, especially as there are usually players at big prices that will make the frame for this market.

FAQ

The EFL Championship is the second highest division in English professional soccer behind the Premier League. It’s a league that features 24 teams, and many of these clubs have played in the top flight and have aspirations to return there. The teams in the EFL Championship play each other home and away during the regular season, which then determines the sides that go up automatically (first and second) along with the clubs who are relegated (22nd, 23rd and 24th). The teams between third and seventh then compete in the playoffs for the one remaining promotion spot.

The first Championship matches kick off at the beginning of August and matches are then played regularly throughout the autumn, winter and spring. The final matches of the regular season take place in early May before we have the playoff semifinal matches and then the playoff final.

Leeds United are the most famous club in the Championship and is the favorite among soccer betting sites after being among the top spots during the 2018-19 season before losing in the playoffs to Derby County. Fulham is among the three relegated teams from the Premier League and is also trading at strong odds, while Cardiff also came down last year and will be expected to mount a promotion challenge. West Brom was also a playoff loser last season and are among the favorites to get promoted back to the top flight.
