The Los Angeles Chargers might have dodged a catastrophic injury. Something that could've changed how their NFL season would've played out.

Late in the fourth quarter of Thursday’s 27-24 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, Herbert was hit in his midsection by Chiefs defensive end Mike Danna.

Herbert needed to be helped off the field. He missed one play before coming back and then was drilled by Kansas City defensive linemen Frank Clark and George Karlaftis.

Herbert Played Hurt In Fourth Quarter

Herbert’s injury was evident with just over two minutes left in the fourth quarter. He rolled out to the right, with open field ahead of him but pulled up and awkwardly threw the ball out of bounds when he could have run for the first down. Herbert was clearly ailing but stayed in the game.

On the next play, he fired a 35-yard pass down the middle of the field to DeAndre Carter for a first down. Four plays later, Herbert found Joshua Palmer for a 7-yard touchdown.

Despite how beat up Herbert appeared, Chargers coach Brandon Staley was not concerned about the future status of the team’s franchise quarterback.

When asked if he had any concern about Herbert going forward, Staley was adamant, “No, because he’s Justin Herbert. It was just a tough NFL game, and he took some big hits.”

Herbert Had Big Numbers Despite Injury

Herbert was seen after the game walking to the X-ray room with the medical staff. Despite his certainty, Staley later admitted the team will know more about Herbert’s status later on Friday.

Herbert completed 33 of 48 passes for 334 yards and three touchdowns.

But he threw a costly 99-yard interception that Jaylen Watson returned for a touchdown, giving the Chiefs a 24-17 advantage with 10:29 left in the fourth quarter.

Chargers Future Odds With Herbert Uncertainty

Despite the loss and Herbert’s uncertainty, the Chargers' odds to win the Super Bowl has not moved that much.

Los Angeles was +1400 before the season to take the Super Bowl and is still +1400 at DraftKings Sportsbook.

Better odds on the Chargers can be found at BetMGM and FanDuel where the team is +1600 to win the Super Bowl.
