The Arizona Diamondbacks (18-18) are on the short list of over-performing teams in Major League Baseball this season.
The Diamondbacks have a roster that is playing well together, and there is no reason to doubt their recent success simply because they are on the road, playing the juggernaut Los Angeles Dodgers (22-12) in a doubleheader on Tuesday.
D-Backs Perform Well Against Strong Bullpens
One thing in the Dodgers’ favor is their bullpen. The bullpen has saved seven of nine opportunities for 78% save percentage on the season.
But that might not cause problems for Arizona. The D-Backs are 14-6 on the moneyline, making 13.7 units, when facing a team with a strong bullpen that is converting 75% or more of their save opportunities this season.
Second Game Betting Pick
In the second game on Tuesday night, the Dodgers will have left-hander Tyler Anderson on the mound. He has posted a 2-0 record in four starts, with a terrible 5.22 ERA.
However, his control has been great. He has walked just five batters, spanning 20 2/3 innings of work.
Pitchers with solid control haven’t caused Arizona many problems this year. The Diamondbacks are 8-1 on the moneyline, making 9.5 units, when facing a starting pitcher who averages 1.75 or fewer walks per game this season.
The Philadelphia Phillies recently lit Anderson up for seven earned runs on 10 hits in six innings of work. I think the Diamondbacks will give him a similar experience in the second game tonight.
Arizona is countering with right-handed pitcher Merrill Kelly, pictured, a 33-year-old Houston native. In seven starts this season, Kelly has posted a 3-1 record with an impressive 1.71 ERA.
