Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving have generated the most NBA betting headlines this offseason as the Brooklyn Nets duo has been rumored to be on the move numerous times.

Durant requested a trade on June 29 with the Miami Heat and Phoenix Suns as his preferred destinations. But no team has yet to meet the Nets’ asking price, and Irving opted in to remain with the team.

While it seems more likely both Irving and Durant remain with the team, the next big name who could be on the move is Utah Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell. The Athletic reported the Jazz and New York Knicks have started potential trade talks around the Utah All-Star guard.

What the Knicks Could Offer

The Knicks have the draft capital to acquire someone of Mitchell’s caliber.

New York has eight future first-round draft picks, including four of its own and four it acquired from trades.

Knicks’ second-year player Quentin Grimes is also a player of interest for the Jazz, according to The Athletic.

Jazz in Rebuild Mode

The signs of a rebuild for the Jazz started when it traded away guard Royce O’Neale, a key D-and-3 guard that started 77 games for the team last year.

Utah then traded All-Star center Rudy Gobert to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Patrick Beverley, Leandro Bolmaro, Walker Kessler, Jarred Vanderbilt, Malik Beasley and four first-round picks, with three of those unprotected, and a top-five protected first-round selection in 2029.

These moves, in addition to coach Quin Snyder resigning during the offseason, marked the end of the championship window for Mitchell, Gobert and Mike Conley. It only makes sense the Jazz would look to move Mitchell and continue to develop its next core.

Odds Movement

On June 29, the Knicks were 250/1 at BetMGM Sportsbook to win the NBA title.

Then New York signed Jalen Brunson (16.3 points per game) in hopes of boosting the fifth-lowest scoring offense in the league (106.5 points per contest). The Brunson signing boosted the Knicks to 100/1 at BetMGM.

The recent Mitchell rumors have shortened the Knicks’ odds more, putting the team at 66/1 to win the 2023 NBA title.

Meanwhile, the Jazz is down to 125/1 as the organization looks to be in the midst of a rebuild.
